"There is much here that is fascinating and adds to our knowledge of the multiplicity of ways in which people experience and live their sexualities." Sexualities

"Refusing the easy collapse of queer studies into gay and lesbian studies, Corber and Valocchi offer scholars and activists a collection of essays that maps the complexities of non-normative desires as they are produced in and through social institutions, economic practices, disciplinary structures, and cultural discourse. In the process, they reclaim the political hope that queer studies is a radical intervention into regimes of being and knowing!" Robyn Wiegman, Duke University

"Queer Studies may very well be the first Reader that students and professors should consult to get an overview of the field. Interdisciplinary, ambitious, and accessible, the volume is a fine contribution to this dynamic field." Steven Seidman, University at Albany, State University of New York

Educational Research: Competencies for Analysis and Applications (with MyEducationLab) (9th Edition) (MyEducationLab Series) (Hardcover)
Learning how to decipher the technical jargon surrounding research is never easy. This book makes it easy. Along with thorough explanations and an abundance of examples, there is a bit of humor tossed in. The humor helps break up the intense explanations. There are also many charts and graphs that help synthesize the information into an easy learning format. I would recommend this book for anyone who has to learn about research.

- MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Sixth Edition (Paperback)

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Sixth Edition (Paperback)
Knowledge of MLA formatting is a necessity for writing college research papers these days. As an older, part-time college student, I found myself lacking the skills to properly cite information in my papers. Not having time to take an entry level English class, to learn the MLA style, I turned to the MLA Handbook for guidance.

This easy to use book has been a lifesaver! The book is well organized and provides plenty of examples. The table of contents is broken down so well, something that is not common enough in textbooks, that within minutes of picking up the book, you have a concrete example of what you need.

Each section starts with the most basic example of citing from a particular type of work and builds, step-by-step, to a complete citation. The applicable example for entry into the Works Cited Page can be found with ease as well.

If you will be writing research papers, or currently find yourself having difficulty citing, this is a tool you should strongly consider.

Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches (Paperback)

The Third Edition of the bestselling text Research Design by John W. Creswell enables readers to compare three approaches to researchqualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodsin a single research methods text. The book presents these three approaches side by side within the context of the process of research from the beginning steps of philosophical assumptions to the writing and presenting of research. Written in a user-friendly manner, Creswell's text does not rely on technical jargon. He cuts to the core of what a reader needs to know to read and design research in part by showcasing ideas in a scaffold approach so that the reader understands ideas from the simple to the complex.

Key updates to the Third Edition:

* Presents the preliminary steps of using philosophical assumptions in the beginning of the book
* Provides an expanded discussion on ethical issues
* Emphasizes new Web-based technologies for literature searches
* Offers updated information about mixed methods research procedures
* Contains a glossary of terms
* Highlights research tips throughout the chapters incorporating the authors experiences over the last 35 years

- The Craft of Research, 2nd edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) (Paperback)

The Craft of Research, 2nd edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) (Paperback)
The authors of The Craft of Research, Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb and Joseph M. Williams, presented a scholarly, practical guide to mastering the art of research. They provided a book with tested programmes for turning rough drafts and clumsy prose into clear, powerful and effective writing. The authors presented their propositions, arguments and solutions in a logical, thorough and convincing manner.

The authors produced a unique guide that shows that real research loops back and forth. They explain how each part of the process influences all the others. The authors showed that asking a question about a topic can prepare the researcher to draft a paper, how the process of drafting can reveal problems with an argument, and how the elements of a good introduction can reveal the need for additional research.

The authors encourage researchers to put themselves into the shoes of the readers. They explained how that can be done, by explaining how readers read. Understanding how readers read enables the researcher to know better how to meet their expectations and help readers to see things the researcher's way.

The book teaches skills that are essential to the success of any research project. These include finding a topic, generating research questions, constructing arguments, creating a first draft, and revising that draft for a final report that meets the needs of a community of readers.

The book reflects the way researchers work, proceeding from a complex loop of thinking, writing, revising, refining and rethinking. The book teaches that a successful research project is a carefully orchestrated conversation between researcher and reader.

The book is essential reading before one goes to a library or begin collecting data, presenting evidence or doing an outline, as its expertise is essential in giving direction to the research efforts.

ABSTRACT

The title of this research is A CONTRASTIVE STUDY OF ENGLISH AND JAVANESE DERIVATIONAL AFFIXES. In this research, the researcher here discusses the affixation process especially in derivational affixes. The objectives of this study are to analyze the types, meanings, functions of derivational affixes that often appear in English and Javanese short stories, and to describe the similarities and differences of derivational affixes both two languages short stories that are analyzed.

In this research, the researcher applies qualitative research which suitable with the data forms. The data of this research are words with contain of the derivational affixes. The primary data of this research are words from English and Javanese short stories, and the secondary data are are taken from the affixation theory from several books. In method of collecting data, the researcher uses “metode simak” (observing method) and continued by “teknik catat” (note technique). First, the researcher reads the short stories. Then, she writes all the words with contain of the derivational affixes. Then all of the data are noted in data cards. The data are identified and classified based on the result and the position where the derivational affixes added, the types of derivational affixes, the functions, the meanings, and the similarities and differences of English and Javanese derivational affixes. In method of analyzing data, the researcher applies the contrastive method from Poedjosudarmo.

The result of this research shows that the classification of derivational affixes would change the class word. The classification of derivational affixes based on the position that often appear in English are prefixes and suffixes, and in Javanese are prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and circumfixes. The meanings of derivational affixes that frequently appear in English are negative meaning, not, again, reserve action, act of, able to be etc. The meanings of derivational affixes in Javanese are to do, looking for, agent, suffering, condition, etc. The functions of derivational affixes that are often appear in English are to change adjective to adjective, noun to noun, and adjective to verb, noun to adjective, verb to verb, verb to noun, etc. The functions of derivational affixes in Javanese are to change noun to verb, noun to adjective, verb to noun, adjective to noun, etc. There are also several similarities and differences of English and Javanese derivational affixes.
