“Creswell has produced an even more outstanding and valuable text for qualitative research than the First Edition.”

-Edith King, University of Denver

Like the bestselling First Edition, this new version explores the philosophical underpinnings, history, and key elements of each of five qualitative inquiry approaches: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study. Using an accessible and engaging writing style, author John W. Creswell compares theoretical frameworks, ways to employ standards of quality, and strategies for writing introductions to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing a narrative, and verifying results.

New to the Second Edition:

* Brings the philosophical and theoretical orientations to the beginning of the book: This grounds students in the foundational thinking behind these methods much earlier.
* Gives broader coverage of narrative research: One of the original five approaches is expanded from "Biography" to "Narrative," thus exploring a wider range of narrative opportunities, biography still being one of them.
* Offers a much deeper discussion of interpretive approaches: There is much more emphasis on interpretive and postmodern perspectives such as feminism and critical theory.
* Provides more specific steps for doing research within each approach: The actual procedure for each approach is discussed and includes the sub-types of qualitative research within each of the five approaches.
* Illustrates phenomenology and ethnography: Two new, recent sample journal articles: one covering a phenomenological study; the other on an ethnographic study are included.
* Includes additional examples: More examples from the human services add to the robust examples in education, sociology, and psychology already present in the text.

Innovative Instructor's Resource CD:
An accompanying Instructor’s Resource CD contains many useful resources including PowerPoint slides, syllabi, checklists, exercises, annotated references to SAGE journal articles, and relevant Web links.

Intended Audience:
This is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in introductory qualitative research methods across the Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences.

Review
"It is both usefully expanded and very reader friendly. The book has a distinctive helpful tone and an almost "how to do it" style. If one liked the first edition, then he or she will probably adore this one." (Organizational Research Methods )

"The success of mixed methods is particularly noticeable in medical and health-related research: in order to secure funding, it is advisable to incorporate a quantitative element into any such research project, and from the point of view of working with human subjects, most qualitative researchers would argue that a qualitative element is required." -Alison Scott-Baumann, University of Gloucestershire (Alison Scott-Baumann )

Abstract

The spirit of the American Dreams is clearly the basic foundation that shapes the American people thinking pattern. The Miracle film that is based on the true story of this great nation shows how the American people faith to their American Dreams enable them to survive in the hard time, to conquer the challenges and become the champion at the end. This research conducts the analysis on the film of Miracle, one among many other movies that has the application of the American Dreams spirit to pursue the happiness in life as the main theme. The purposes of the research are to describe the social condition of America based on the Miracle film time setting and to find out how the spirit of the American Dreams influences the success of American people, especially in ice hockey as shown in the film of Miracle

American studies as a discipline has its own approach, namely an interdisciplinary approach. This approach involves social science such as literature, history, politics, economic structure and so fort. The research adopted the qualitative method. The data collected is in the form of words or pictures rather than numbers. The written results of the research contain quotations from the data to illustrate and substantiate the presentation the primary data is obtained from the books of American history and other supporting books which have correlation with American culture especially around the American Dreams subject. The secondary data is obtained from internet and the other articles, which have correlation with the topic.

The result of the research shows the facts that, (1) The social conditions in America, as it is shown in the film, were in the worst point in the nation entire history. The people were in the crisis of confident as the impact of the internal government affairs and the involvement of their country in several international conflicts. Economic condition at that era was still in recovering process and the impact of that condition influences the psychological state of the American people. (2) USA Ice Hockey team success to make their 'American Dreams' become reality with: optimism, hard work, hard struggle, and nationalism. (3) The faith to American Dreams Influences the success of the American people as reflected in Miracle film. It can be noticed that USA team victories over the USSR squad in Ice Hockey Olympic Game in 1980 became the USA first leap to successfully become the sole super power country after that era.

International Studies: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Global Issues

International Studies: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Global Issues

Description
No one social science can adequately provide explanations and solutions for problems that transcend national boundaries, such as international conflict, political and economic development, ethnic conflict, and terrorism. This core text is the first to provide a much-needed interdisciplinary approach to international studies. The authors include a geographer, a historian, a political scientist, and an anthropologist. Emphasizing their connectedness, each details the methodologies and subject matter of their respective disciplines to provide a fuller understanding of the world.

The second part of the book applies these disciplines to regional chapters, providing students with an understanding of the issues facing these regions and their connection to the global community. Case studies at the end of the book give studies students a closer look at the geographic, historical, cultural, economic, and political elements of issues such as genocide and national identity. This disciplinary and regional combination provides professors with a cohesive framework to teach the broad spectrum of international affairs through a wholly unique interdisciplinary approach that is indispensable for students’ understanding of global issues.

This research entitled “A Study of Language Differences Based on Social Status in Titanic Movie” is intended to find out the kinds of language features used by upper class people, kinds of language features used by lower class people, and the similarities and differences of language features used by upper class and lower class people.

This research uses descriptive qualitative method because the researcher describes the data in form of words rather than numbers. The researcher uses dialogue used by men and women in the script of Titanic movie as the data source of this research. The technique used in collecting the data is noting technique. The researcher downloads the scripts of Titanic movie in the internet, then prints the scripts of Titanic movie. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies descriptive technique. She identifies and classifies the dialogues used by men and women in the scripts of Titanic movie and then she selects the dialogues by underlining the words, phrases, clauses, or sentences based on the diction, grammatical elements and pronunciation used by upper class and lower class people.

The result shows that upper class people in Titanic movie use standard forms of grammatical element, diction and pronunciation, and lower class people in Titanic movie often use vernacular forms of grammatical element, diction and pronunciation, but sometimes they also use standard forms. Language features used by upper class and lower class people are similar in conjunctions, prepositions, adverbs, colloquial, the pronunciation of [h] and the pronunciation of [r]. Meanwhile they are different in their hedge, verbs and modals, strong expletives, adjectives, and the pronunciation of ing [iŋ].

Reasoning With Statistics: How To Read Quantitative Research

Reasoning With Statistics: How To Read Quantitative Research

Description
This text is designed to help students become knowledgeable readers of cross-curriculum quantitative research literature. It provides a clear inviting view of quantitative research strategies for those students who may or may not have a mathematical background. The authors impart a conceptual understanding rather than teach calculational methods. The text can be used as a supplement for a basic statistics course or for any course requiring students to read and digest quantitative research literature. Examples are cross-curriculum and generic. Its strength is that it is very brief and doesn't overwhelm with too much detail.

Review: By Karen Vaughan "Herblady"

I used the first edition of Williams' Reasoning with Statistics in the late 70s when I was studying city and regional planning. I had an ambivalent to negative view of statistics (late registration had put me in the class.) But I came to enjoy both the subject and the book, and it led me to further statistical classes. I remember the title decades later. Its strength lies in showing how to use statistics meaningfully in the analysis of real world problems and it is designed to allow non mathemeticians to feel comfortable using statistical methods. It achieves its goal.
