AN ANALYSIS OF NEGATIVE POLITENESS STRATEGIES AS REFLECTED IN THE ‘PRINCES DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT’ MOVIE

ABSTRACT

This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Negative Politeness Strategy as Reflected in the “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” movie. The aim of this study is to describe the negative politeness strategies used by the main characters (Mia and Queen Clarisse), the functions of negative politeness strategies used by the main characters (Mia and Queen Clarisse), and the reasons for using negative politeness strategies as reflected in the “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” movie.

The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The research object in this research was negative politeness strategies used by the main characters. The source of data is the scripts of a movie entitled ‘Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”. The writer uses noting technique and transferring technique to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the writer applies the descriptive method.

The research findings show that there are ten negative politeness strategies used by the main characters (Mia and Queen Clarisse) in the Princess “Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” movie. They are be conventionally indirect, question and hedges, be pessimistic, minimize the imposition, give deference, apologize, impersonalize S and H, states the FTA as general rule, nominalize, go on record as incurring a debt, or as not indebting. The functions of negative politeness strategies used by the main characters (Mia and Queen Clarisse) are to show respect, to save H’s face, to strengthen S’s statement, to soften S’s statement, to express apology, to express sympathy, and to express gratitude. The reasons of using negative politeness used by the main characters are social distance (symmetric relation), the absolute ranking of the threat of the FTA or face management, level of class (asymmetric relation).
