THE SPEECH ACTS ANALYSIS ON THE SCRIPT NOTTING HILL (A PRAGMATIC STUDY)

ABSTRACT

The title of research is The Speech Acts Analysis on The Script Notting Hill (A Pragmatic Study) which intend to find out the kinds, functions and meaning of speech act on the script Notting Hill.

The object of this research are speech acts of the utterances in conversation by characters on the script Notting Hill. The writer takes sources of the main data from the script of Notting Hill film taken from internet. This research uses pragmatic study. In collecting the data, the writer uses noting technique. The writer notes some sentences that contain speech acts on the script Notting Hill and makes classification of data. And to analyze the data, the writer uses contextual method. 

The result of the research shows that the kinds of speech act on the script Notting Hill are illocutionary act which has 108 or 78.3% and perlocutionary act which has 30 or 21.7%. The fuctions of speech act on the script Notting Hill show that 77 data or 58.8% have directive function, 42 data or 30.4% have expressive function, 10 data or 7.3 % have representative function, 8 data or 5.8% have commisives fuction, and 1 datum or 0,7% have declaration function. The meaning of the utterance of speech act on the script Notting Hill consist of 10 data of offering, 1 datum of threatening, 1 datum of ordering, 6 data of promising, 21 data of stating, 4 data suggesting, 33 data of commanding, 1 datum of complaining, 25 data of requesting, 6 data of conggrulating, 9 data of thanking, and 21 data of appologizing.
