A Comparative Study of Implicit Meaning Found in Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and Its Translation

ABSTRACT

This research entitled “A Comparative Study of Implicit Meaning Found in Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and Its Translation” is intended to find out: (1) the lingual forms of implicit referential meaning in the novel of Twilight and its translation version, (2) the lingual forms of implicit organizational meaning in novel of Twilight and its translation version, (3) the lingual forms of the implicit situational meaning in novel of Twilight and its translation version.

This research belongs to qualitative and comparative type. The object of this research is the implicit meaning existing in novel of Twilight and its translation. In collecting data, the researcher used noting technique. He collected the data and then noted or wrote important data required. After that, the researcher has analyzed the data by using qualitative and comparative method which is presented in the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences.

The result of this study shows that there are three kinds of the lingual forms of implicit meanings found namely (1) implicit referential meaning which consists of implicit referential meaning translated explicitly, implicit personal reference translated as personal reference, implicit demonstrative reference translated explicitly, implicit demonstrative reference translated as demonstrative reference, implicit comparative reference translated explicitly, and implicit comparative reference translated as demonstrative reference, (2) implicit organizational meaning which consists of ellipsis sentence translated explicitly, ellipsis sentence translated implicitly, passive sentence translated as passive sentence, substitution word translated explicitly, and substitution word translated as substitution word, and (3) implicit situational meaning which consists of implicit situational meaning as the effect of cultural factor, implicit situational meaning as the effect of cultural factor translated explicitly, and implicit situational meaning based on the signal movement of the moment of utterance translated similarly, and implicit situational meaning as the effect of relation between speaker and hearer. They are often found in translation to prevent vagueness, ambiguity, and ineffectiveness as well as extravagant sentence.
