ABSTRACT
The research entitled A Syntactic Analysis of English Phrases in Sentences in Opinion Column of The Jakarta Post is intended to explain English phrases in The Jakarta Post. The discussion involves types of phrases and functions of phrases which are used in sentences in Opinion Column of The Jakarta Post.
The research is qualitative research because the data are in the form of word. The number of data which is taken by the writer from The Jakarta Post consists of 324 data. Besides, noting techniques is chosen as a method of collecting data. Next, the data are classified and identified in certain categories according to the types and functions of the phrase in the sentences in The Jakarta Post. Then, structural analysis method is taken to analyze the data.
The result of the study shows that there are some types of phrase used in Opinion Column of The Jakarta Post. They are verb phrase, adjective phrase, adverbial phrase, prepositional phrase, participial phrase, gerund phrase, infinitive phrase, and noun phrase. Each type of phrase may have functions in any position of sentence. Verb phrase functions as the predicate of a sentence. Adjective phrase functions as a subjective complement in the sentence. Adverbial phrase functions to modify verb. Prepositional phrase functions as modifier or adverb in the sentence. Participial phrase functions as a modifier or an adverb in the sentence. Gerund phrase can be used in all nominal function in the sentence. It can be in the position of subject, subjective complement, object and objective complement. Infinitive phrase functions as subject of verb, subjective complement, object of verb, modifier of the noun head and adverb which modifies verb, adverb, or sentence. And noun phrase also can be used in all nominal function in sentence like a gerund phrase. At the end of this research, the researcher finds that the most frequent occurrence of all phrase types is noun phrase with 96 phrases out of 324 phrases or 29.62%.
