AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION STRATEGIES ON CULTURAL TERMS IN CERITA RAKYAT DIY SERIES

ABSTRACT

This research is entitled “An Analysis of Translation Strategy on Cultural Terms in Cerita Rakyat DIY Series. The purposes of this research are to find firstly the type of translation strategies used by the translator in the book Cerita Rakyat DIY Series and secondly to know the equivalence meaning of the usage of the strategies between source language and target language.

The research belongs to descriptive qualitative. The sources of the data are the books entitled Cerita Rakyat DIY Series. The data are collected by noting technique. The research applies the descriptive method to analyze the data. The collected data are identified, categorized and analyzed based on the theory researcher used. 

The research finding shows that there are four strategies used by the translator to translate cultural words in the book Cerita Rakyat DIY Series namely borrowing strategy, cultural substitution strategy, general words strategy and describing strategy. There are 17 data of the translation strategy by borrowing, or 44.7% of the total data. The second is translation by cultural substitutions. There are 8 data of the translation strategy by cultural substitution or 21.5% of the total data. The third is translation by general words. There are 7 data of the translation strategy by general words or 18.4% of the total data. The last is translation by describing. There are 6 data of the translation strategy by describing, or 15.7% of the total data. The result also shows that nil equivalence occurs for borrowing strategy, one to one equivalence occurs for cultural substitution, one to part of one equivalence happens for general words strategy and formal equivalence exists for describing strategy.
