The research entitled A syntactic analysis of Noun Phrase Modifier Used In The Humorous Stories of Nasreddin, the Wise Man is a qualitative descriptive study. The purposes of this study are to determine the types of modifier and to describe the elements of modifier used in the noun phrase in the humorous stories of Nasreddin, the Wise Man.
In this research there are 351 noun phrases of 242 sentences. Data are collected using the observation method as a method of data collection, and followed by noting technique. Because the data are too much to be explained as a whole, the researcher takes 50 examples of noun phrases to describe in the discussion or 14, 29%. While in analyzing the data, the researcher uses the structural analysis method. Then the researcher uses the theory of syntactic analysis as a theoretical approach to research.
The result of this research indicates that there are three kinds of modifier in the humorous stories of Nasreddin, the Wise Man based on the way of modifier modifying the noun phrase, namely: pre-modifier modify the noun phrase, post-modifier modify the noun phrase, and pre-modifier with post-modifier modify the noun phrase. Among the three types of modifier, which is the most widely used is pre-modifier modify the noun phrase with the number 262 noun phrases of 350 or 74, 9%. While the elements contained in the modifier is 12 elements. Those elements are deictic, adjective/adjective phrase, adverb/adverb phrase, preposition/prepositional phrase, verb (V-ing and V.III), and noun as elements of a pre-modifier. Preposition/prepositional phrase, adjective/adjective phrase, adverb/adverb phrase, noun, verb (V-ing, V.III, to Inf.), and adjective clauses are post-modifier elements. In the pre-modifier, the researcher finds almost all noun phrases uses deictic in it. But researcher does not find preposition. Researcher finds all the elements in post-modifier. Most elements that are used by post-modifier are preposition and adjective clause. Other elements are very rarely used.
