AS THE REFLECTION OF CLOSE SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP AMONG THE ENGLISH SOCIETY MEMBERS AS REFLECTED IN JAMES CAMERON’S TITANIC

ABSTRACT

This study is entitled “A Study of Casual Language Style as the Reflection of Close Social Relationship among the English Society Members as Reflected in James Cameron’s Titanic”. This study is mainly aimed at understanding the characteristics of the casual style in Titanic Community and describing the factors that cause the usage of the style.

This study uses descriptive qualitative research design. The data source of this study is Titanic the movie. Further, casual language style available in Titanic dialogue script becomes the object of this research. The data of this research are mainly available in lingual unit like sounds, words, and sentences produced by the characters in the movie. In addition, this study applies observation method in collecting the data with the next step is noting technique. The technique for analyzing the data is conducted through the following steps: observing the casual linguistics style available in Titanic movie script, identifying the casual characteristics available in the script, classifying the casual lingual units from the script, classifying the factors that cause the usage of casual style and drawing conclusions based on the collected data.

The findings of this research come into two essential conclusions based on the formulated problems.Firstly, the characteristics of casual style that are brought out by the members of Titanic community range from phonological, morphological, and syntactic aspect. Secondly, factors causing the usage of casual style in Titanic community can be in the form of participants’ relationship, social context, as well as various social factors like age, gender, and social class differences.
