A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ONOMATOPOEIA USED IN ENGLISH AND INDONESIAN VERSION OF NARUTO COMIC

ABSTRACT

This thesis is entitled “A comparative study of onomatopoeia used in English and Indonesian version of Naruto comic.” It is aimed at finding out the functions of onomatopoeia, the forms of onomatopoeia and the similarities and the differences between English onomatopoeia and Indonesian onomatopoeia.

The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative research. The writer does not use any statistical procedure or calculation. The object of this research is onomatopoeia in English and Indonesian versions of comic. The data collecting technique of this research is noting technique. The writer reads English and Indonesian versions of comics comprehensively, takes a note the onomatopoeia found in English and Indonesian versions of comic and makes a file of English and Indonesian onomatopoeia. In analyzing the data, the writer identifies the onomatopoeia in English and Indonesian, categorizes the structure of onomatopoeia, compares the forms of English and Indonesian onomatopoeia, finds out the similarities and differences between English and Indonesian onomatopoeia and draws conclusion.

The result of the research shows that the functions of onomatopoeia are: to show the sound of speed motion, to show sound if hitting metals, to show action fighting scenes, to show sound of animals, to show interjection., to show the sound made by mechanical device. The forms of onomatopoeia are monosyllable, bi syllable and multi syllable. The similarities and the differences of English onomatopoeia and Indonesian onomatopoeia lie on pronunciation, spelling, and structure.
