ABSTRACT

The research entitled A Morphological Analysis of Derivational Affixes Used in the Articles in Jusco Pearl Magazine is descriptive qualitative. The objectives of this research are to describe the types of derivational affixes used in the articles of Jusco Pearl Magazine, to describe the types of derivational affixes that are frequently used in the articles of Jusco Pearl Magazine, and to describe how the addition of derivational affixes influence word meaning and function.

The data of this research consists of 438 English words used in the articles in Jusco Pearl Magazine edition July 2005. To gather the data, the researcher uses observation method, documentation, and noting technique. In addition, the researcher uses structural analysis method and contextual analysis method to analyze the data. Furthermore, a morphological analysis is applied as theoretical approach to do the research.

The result of the study shows that the types of derivational affixes used in the articles in Jusco Pearl Magazine include derivational affixes which change verbs into adjectives (V-A), derivational affixes which change verbs into nouns (V-N), derivational affixes which change nouns into adjectives (N-A), derivational affixes which change nouns into verbs (N-V), derivational affixes which change adjectives into nouns (A-N), derivational affixes which change adjectives into verbs (A-V), derivational affixes which change adjectives into adverbs (A-Adv), derivational affixes which change nouns into nouns (N-N), derivational affixes which change verbs into verbs (V-V), and derivational affixes which change adjectives into adjectives (A-A). The researcher also finds that the type of derivational affixes which change adjectives into adverbs (A-Adv) constitutes the most frequent occurrences of derivational affixes with 120 out of 438 words or 27%. At the end of analysis, the researcher finds that the addition of derivational affixes into the word would influence either the function or meaning of the existing word.
