A SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF SENTENCE TYPES AND PATTERNS USED IN MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE’S SONG LYRICS

ABSTRACT

The research entitled A Syntactic Analysis of Sentence Types and Patterns Used in My Chemical Romance’s Song Lyrics aims to describe the types and patterns of sentences used in My Chemical Romance’s song lyrics and also the type and to describe the frequency of occurrence for both sentence type and pattern used in My Chemical Romance’s song lyrics in the album The Black Parade. 

 

This study uses descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is taken from lyrics used in My Chemical Romance’s songs in the late album entitled The Black Parade. The album consists of 14 songs. There are 106 sentences analyzed by the writer. Observation method is adapted to collect the data in the ways of reading and observing the song lyrics. The writer then uses noting technique to note the data. In analyzing the song lyrics, the writer carefully reads and observes them in order to find and determine the sentence types and patterns by using structural analysis method. The writer then identifies every single sentence in My Chemical Romance’s song lyrics according to its sentence type and pattern followed by a step to categorize the sentences on their frequency. Then, at last, the writer tries to count the total number of sentence types and patterns found to know the frequency of sentence type and pattern commonly used.

The result shows that the sentence types found in My Chemical Romance’s song lyrics in the album The Black Parade are simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentences in which the highest frequency is simple sentence. From 106 sentences, there are 89 simple sentences. The percentage is 84% of amount of sentences. Besides, the sentence patterns found are the pattern S V, S V A, S V C, S V O, S V O C, S V IO DO, and S V O A. In this case, there are two sentence patterns occurring with the highest frequency in My Chemical Romance’s song lyrics. They are the pattern S V O and S V C. From 106 sentences, the two patterns are equally used in 27 sentences per each. The percentage is 25,5% of amount of sentences.
