AN ANALYSIS OF PERLOCUTIONARY ACT IN A FRINGE OF LEAVES BY PATRICK WHITE

ABSTRACT

This research entitled “An Analysis of Perlocutionary Act in A Fringe of Leaves by Patrick White” is intended to know the kinds of perlocutionary act and to find the forms of utterance effects written in the story of A Fringe of Leaves by Patrick White.

This analysis is the descriptive qualitative research because the researcher describes the data in the form of words rather than numbers. The researcher uses conversation between Mr. Austin Roxburge and Mrs. Ellen Roxburge in A Fringe of Leaves by Patrick White as the source of data. The technique used in collecting data is noting technique. The researcher notes the conversation in A Fringe of Leaves by Patrick White and then she selects conversation between Mr. Austin Roxburge and Mrs. Ellen Roxburge in A Fringe of Leaves by Patrick White, which bears the perlocutionary act. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies descriptive analyzing model, she identifies and classifies the conversation between Mr. Austin Roxburge and Mrs. Ellen Roxburge on the basis of the kinds of perlocutionary act. She, then, analyzes the forms of utterance effect performed by Mrs. Ellen Roxburge after receiving the messages from Mr. Austin Roxburge.

The result shows that the kinds of perlocutionary act are assertives, directives, commisives, expressives, and declaratives. The forms of utterance effect found in the research are the encouraging, inspiring, getting something to do, attracting attention, feeling sorry, wondering, and intimidating effects. The encouraging effect is found in declarative and interrogative sentences. Inspiring effect is found in declarative and interrogative sentences. Effect of getting something to do is found in declarative and exclamatory sentences. Attracting attention effect is found in imperative and interrogative sentences. Feeling sorry effect is found in interrogative sentence. Wondering effect is found in declarative, imperative, and interrogative sentences. Intimidating effect is found in declarative and exclamatory sentences.
