AMERICAN DREAMS AS REFLECTED IN GAVIN O’CONNOR'S FILM MIRACLE

Abstract

The spirit of the American Dreams is clearly the basic foundation that shapes the American people thinking pattern. The Miracle film that is based on the true story of this great nation shows how the American people faith to their American Dreams enable them to survive in the hard time, to conquer the challenges and become the champion at the end. This research conducts the analysis on the film of Miracle, one among many other movies that has the application of the American Dreams spirit to pursue the happiness in life as the main theme. The purposes of the research are to describe the social condition of America based on the Miracle film time setting and to find out how the spirit of the American Dreams influences the success of American people, especially in ice hockey as shown in the film of Miracle


American studies as a discipline has its own approach, namely an interdisciplinary approach. This approach involves social science such as literature, history, politics, economic structure and so fort. The research adopted the qualitative method. The data collected is in the form of words or pictures rather than numbers. The written results of the research contain quotations from the data to illustrate and substantiate the presentation the primary data is obtained from the books of American history and other supporting books which have correlation with American culture especially around the American Dreams subject. The secondary data is obtained from internet and the other articles, which have correlation with the topic.

The result of the research shows the facts that, (1) The social conditions in America, as it is shown in the film, were in the worst point in the nation entire history. The people were in the crisis of confident as the impact of the internal government affairs and the involvement of their country in several international conflicts. Economic condition at that era was still in recovering process and the impact of that condition influences the psychological state of the American people. (2) USA Ice Hockey team success to make their 'American Dreams' become reality with: optimism, hard work, hard struggle, and nationalism. (3) The faith to American Dreams Influences the success of the American people as reflected in Miracle film. It can be noticed that USA team victories over the USSR squad in Ice Hockey Olympic Game in 1980 became the USA first leap to successfully become the sole super power country after that era.

PERMISSIVE CULTURE IN EUROPEAN SOCIETY IN 1980’S ERA AS REFLECTED IN ROSA LIKSOM’S ONE NIGHT STAND: A SOCIOCULTURAL ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT

The title of this thesis is Permissive Culture in European Society in 1980’s Era as Reflected in Rosa Liksom’s One Night Stand: A Sociocultural Analysis. The writer is motivated to choose Rosa Liksom’s One Night Stand as her topic in this thesis because of the following:first, cultural change that happen in European Society might influence changes in all aspects of lives, especially it can influence Indonesian culture.These influences can be bad influences. Second, Rosa Liksom’s One Night Stand is a novel that gives new insight on literary study, since it is considered as punk literature, it is quiet different with other novel that talks about romance or tragedy written by English author. The third, there are some moral values of the novel that can be taken. The objective of this research are to describe the kinds of permissive culture, to describe the reasons of permissive culture, and to find the moral values that can be taken from Rosa Liksom’s One Night Stand.

In this research, the writer performs descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research is the novel One Night Stand which consists of forty three short stories written by Rosa Liksom. The object of the research is focused on permissive culture in 1980’s as describe in the novel. This research is grouped into a library research. The primary source is the novel entitles One Night Stand, while the secondary sources are any books in relation to the study. The data of the research are gathered through observation and documentation The writer also takes the data from the internet. Finally, they are analyzed by using the socio-cultural approach proposed by Faruk (1994).

The result of the research shows that the permissive culture in European society in 1980’s era such as free sex, cohabitation, lesbian and homosexual, juvenile delinquency, drinking habit, woman smoking, drug and narcotics habit caused by environmental influences, the lack of the family rules, freedom in all aspects of life and biological factor. The moral values that can be found in One Night Stand are permissive culture is a form of human morality degradation and it should not be transferred nor being developed by other countries. Family plays an important role in controlling their children to be far from any kinds of permissiveness. Parents must pay more attention to their children and concern in all their children’s balance life. Sex education is important to be taught by young people so that they can avoid it and far from the bad effects of free sex. Government should give freedom to the citizens in a right place, and give freedom by considering moral values, religion rules, and norm that should be obeyed by all citizens.

ABSTRACT

The research is entitled The Impact of Capital Punishment in the Life of the Main Character as Reflected in John Grisham’s The Chamber: A Psychological Analysis. The aims of the research are (1) to describe the characterization of the main character in John Grisham’s The Chamber. (2) to describe the impact of capital punishment in the life of the main character. (3) to draw some moral values from the novel.

The subject of the research is a novel entitled The Chamber which is written by John Grisham and the object of the research is the impact of capital punishment in the life of the main character as reflected in the novel. The writer employs library research done by reading many bibliographies critically and comprehensively. After the data are collected, they are analyzed by using Sigmund Freud and Skinner’s theory of psychology as the main approach to search the impact of capital punishment in the novel.

Some of the important research findings can be stated as follows. Sam’s characterizations are described as racist, murderer, sarcastic, patriarchy, terrorist, committing revenge, intelligent, hopeless, love, and confession his mistakes. The impact of capital punishment toward the main character can be divided into two, good and bad impact. The good impacts are, realizing his wrong act, changing his view toward black and Jews, unitizing between grandfather and grandson, preferring to read books, and being a religious man. While the bad impacts are, hating the agent of punishment (the state and the governor), committing suicide, and became sarcastic person. The moral values in the novel are also divided into two; good moral values, which include optimistic and asking forgiveness; and bad moral values which include hopeless, extravagant, and cunning (bribe).

Abstract

The title of this research is Social Condition in Early 20th Century as Reflected Lavyrle Spenser’s That Camden Summer. Social issues are matters directly or indirectly after many or all of society and are considered to be problems, controversial related moral values or both. The aim of this research is to analyze the social condition in America in early 20th century and comparing it with the real condition of American society in early 20th century by using mimetic approach.

In this research, the writer uses mimetic concept to analyze the novel. To collect the data, the writer searches many libraries, does critical reading of the novel and reads several related books. Besides using library research, the writer also take the data from internet. Then the data are collected, and are analyzed by using descriptive, qualitative techniques to give a clear explanation of the objectives of study.

Based on the research, the writer obtains some significant findings. The novel That Camden Summer brings some values to be understood, the social condition is very complicated, and the discrimination problem especially about women happen from long time ago. In this time the woman discrimination always happens in American society although feminist has existed. In this time education for women began to be important. The girls not only learn from her mother but they get formal education similar to the boys. Society is a grouping of individuals which is characterized by common interests and may have distinctive culture and institutions. And the development of technology is very fast as the effect of industrial revolution. Car and telephone is the symbol of modern American lifestyle in early 20th century. Women fashion in this time is influenced by the advent of the automobile. American people read the newspaper has to get information and entertainment. American people get entertainment by watching theater, going to piano concerts and going to picnic. American party is social gathering for celebration and recreation. Many American families only gather all at once around the dinner table.

- THE DIFFERENT TREATMENT BETWEEN THE POOR AND THE RICH FOR HEALTH CARE AS REFLECTED IN THE FILM “JOHN Q”

ABSTRACT


The title of this graduating paper is The Different Treatment between the Poor and the Rich for Health Care as Reflected in the film “John Q”. There are some reasons why the writer chooses this title as the subject of the study. First, this paper is written as a response of wrong some consideration toward the meaning of equality between the poor and the rich. Second, there is the submission of the poor people to face their life, caused by the wrong perception of life. Third and also the most important reason is there are the different treatment between the poor and the rich, especially for health care system. Finally, that there is the consciousness in the hospital siding about help each other and care about the poor people. This case was reflected in the film John Q.

In accomplishing this graduating paper, a descriptive qualitative method: a technique that is stated by statement or sentences or described by explanation or the qualitative research is often defined as a research without counting or numbering and analytical library study have done since the data were collected from some references. The writer employed the interdisciplinary approach in the frame of American studies discipline. The writer uses the pop culture approach and theory of Insurance system in America that is related with the different treatment in the health care as reflected in the film John Q.

Based on the analysis, some conclusions can be drawn that there are four problems that are able to be analyzed. First, there is the portrait of the simple life of American family as storied in John Q’s family; they care about their child education and health care. Second, there is the different treatment between the poor and the rich in the hospital services. Third, there is the difficult procedure of insurance system; in the insurance company and in the law procedure. Fourth, there is the illustration of the submission of poor people to face the problems.

- THE INFLUENCES OF DANCE TOWARD AMERICAN TEENAGERS AS REFLECTED IN THE FILM “TAKE THE LEAD”

ABSTRACT

The research entitled The Influences of Dance toward American Teenagers as Reflected in the Film Take the Lead aimed at two objectives to be achieved. Firstly, to know the influences of dance toward American teenagers. Dance was a new thing for American teenagers which change their life styles. Here, the writer defines dance as the major effect which gives good and bad effects for their life, such as respect, self confidence, creativity, teamwork, trust, responsibility, sportsmanship, arrogant, and struggle. Secondly, this research also focuses on the influences of Pierre as main character who has good characteristics like wise man, motivator man and politeness who changes the lifestyles of American teenagers to be better.

This research is conducted through descriptive qualitative research method which is supported by library research. The data of this research are obtained through main data and supporting data. The main data is taken from the film “Take the Lead”, while supporting data is taken from some source like books, journals, articles, encyclopedia and internets collected to the research. In doing the research, the interdisciplinary approach of American study is employed from various disciplines, such as socio-cultural, historical, and social psychological disciplines.

The result of this study shows that dance gives big influences toward American teenagers which especially affect the change of their lifestyles. The views that dance done just for fun or sport are changed. Through dance there are some points to be gained those are better than their previous lifestyles like free sex, consuming drugs, drink alcohol, clubbing, etc. The research also reveals that Pierre as main character has good influences to the change of lifestyles of American teenagers.

- THE MOTIVATION OF HANK HOOTEN ON KILLING THE JURORS IN GRISHAM’S THE LAST JUROR: A PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY

ABSTRACT

This graduating paper discusses a novel entitled The Last Juror. The objective of writing this graduating paper is derived from the writer’s curiosity to find out the Motivation of Hank Hooten in killing the jurors. In this novel, Hank Hooten is characterized as a man who was suffering from mental disorder, Schizophrenia. The disease, formerly, was actually “sleeping” in his body, but something made it awoke. There are two objectives related to the topic of this graduating paper: (1) to find out Hank Hooten’s character and characterization in the novel, (2) to find out Hank Hooten’s motivation in killing the jurors

In order to achieve the objectives, a psychological approach is used because this graduating paper analyzes one’s motivation in doing certain action and how a disease and love can be a strong motivation in doing crime. A library study method is also applied in this study. There are two sources used: primary and secondary sources. The Last Jurors, the novel, is the primary source in this study. The secondary sources are obtained from books on literature and psychology.

Based on the analysis, the writer concludes that Hank Hooten is suffering from schizophrenia, a mental disorder that made him hallucinating. His main motivation in killing is based on his psychological needs, safety needs, and also belonging and love needs. In order to satisfy his needs, he had to kill the jurors who refused to send the murderer in the gas chamber, to kill the murderer to make his imaginary family live in comfort and safety, and also to threaten people around him so that nobody would harm him or his imaginary family. His crime was also based on his seek of revenge. He wanted to take revenge to people who had taken his beloved woman. He became obsessed with the revenge because Rhoda Kasselaw, the victim of the murderer, was very precious to him. Finally when he had finished and achieved his goals, kill the juror, the murderer, and take revenge, he left the last bullet for himself. He was satisfied with what he had done.

Novel yang digunakan dalam analisis ini adalah The Mayor Of Casterbridge. Analisis ini memberikan fokus terhadap cara pandang pengarangnya. Tujuan utama dalam penulisan ini adalah tentang bagaimana cara pandang pengarang yang di refleksikan dalam novel The Mayor Of Casterbridge berdasarkan teori Genetic Structuralism. Penulisan ini di dasarkan pada analisis struktur elemen yang ada pada novel dan menggambarkan pandangan pengarang di dalam cerita novel yang didasarkan pada teori Genetic Sructuralism.

Penulisan ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penulisan ini adalah novel The Mayor Of Casterbridge karya Thomas Hardy. Data primer adalah novel The Mayor Of Casterbridge itu sendiri dan data sekunder berasal dari sumber lain yang berhubungan dengan analisis data seperti buku tentang teori literature dan tentang teori Genetic structuralism. Tehnik pengumpulan data dengan dokumentasi. Metode analisis data menggunakan deskriptif analisis.

Hasil dari penulisan ini menyatakan bahwa ada hubungan yang erat di antara novel dan kondisi sosial yang terjadi di Inggris. Dalam novel The Mayor Of Casterbridge, Thomas Hardy menggambarkan bagaimana dampak revolusi industri membawa keadaan yang menegangkan diantara tradisi dan perubahan pada awal abad sembilan belas di Inggris dimana terjadi dampak yang tidak menguntungkan atas terjadinya revolusi industri.

ABSTRACT

The title of the study is “THE EFFECTS OF CHINESE REVOLUTION TOWARD SOCIETY IN CHINA AS REFLECTED IN PEARL S BUCK’S LETTER FROM PEKING”. The objective of the study is to describe the social condition when the revolution happened. Then the writer tries to find out the causes and the effects of Chinese Revolution toward society in China.

The study belongs to descriptive qualitative research which does not use statistical procedure. The data collecting method include reading, understanding, and analyzing some books. In data analyzing method, the writer tries to provide clearer information and describe the social condition by searching various kinds of sources that deals the topic being analyzed.

The result of the study is that the novel reflects the social condition in China when Chinese Revolution happened. It also reflects the causes and the effects of Chinese Revolution. The Chinese revolution happens because of some causes, they are social, political, and cultural factors. The political factor is caused by the absolute power of Manchu emperor. In social factors the writer found two factors, they are the coming of foreigner and the defeat of China in Sino Japanese war. The cultural factor is caused by the Manchu dynasty that defends the Confucian. The effects of Chinese Revolution are political, social, and cultural. In politic, the writer found two effects, they are the ending of the monarchy and the beginning of democratic government and foreign domination. The writer classifies the social effects into four. The first effect is the growth of revolutionary organizations. The second effect is the widespread of the rebellion by the intellectuals. The third effect is Westernization. It is divided into religion and ideas. In cultural, the writer found the importance of Confucianism in Chinese society which was greatly decreased. Confucian can mix with western religion.

ABSRACT

In this study, the writer discusses a novel entitled This Book Will Save Your Life written by A.M Homes. It makes her gain the best read novel of the year award 2007. The novel describes Richard Novak, the main character who feels lonely. The purpose of the research is to describe the causes of Richard Novak’s loneliness and to describes how Richard Novak overcomes his loneliness.

The writer uses a socio psychological approach to analyze the main character. The method of the study is descriptive qualitative method to analyze the novel. The main data is taken from the novel written by A.M Homes This Book Will Save Your Life while the supporting data is taken from books, articles, internets which related to the research.

The result of the research are stated as follows: firstly, the causes of Richard Novak’s loneliness are workaholic, money oriented, individualism, divorce, loss of social contact, and retired. Secondly, the ways to overcoming loneliness are seeing a psychological internist, going to silent meditation, and developing relationships.

In this graduating paper the writer choose Miss Congeniality as object of the study. The graduating paper is aimed to describe women stereotyping in America as reflected in Miss Congeniality film.

To analyze this topic, the writer uses America studies as the interdisciplinary approach. Interdisciplinary approach is study which uses more than one approach to research a culture. This study applies pop culture, feminist approach, stereotype theory, and sociological approach. Pop culture states that a film a part of popular culture, in this case, film is something liked by the society in general. Besides that, the writer also uses film theory as literary work. It states that film is a part of literary work. Feminist approach that is used to describes values of femininity. Stereotype approach is used by the writer to find out and to describe women stereotype. The last is sociological approach used to understand the social condition of society in order to understand the problem in the film.

The result of the analysis can be concluded that women stereotype is a standardized conception or image of specific group of people or objects. In the Miss Congeniality film image of women in social condition in America shows that the ideal beauty for women that make women seen as sexual object for men. Women as sexual object is including of women stereotype. Another women stereotyping is women is a weak, less smart and not independent.

This graduating paper is aimed to describe the influence of hip hop music tward American lifestyle which is reflected in Malibu’s Most Wanted film.

Subject from this graduating paper is film entitled Malibu’s Most wanted. The object of this graduating paper itself focus on the influence of hip hop music toward American lifestyle. To complete the main data and information, which related to the topic, the writer uses library research and watches the film carefully. Supporting data taken from the article, journal, internet, and film review as the sources. The data was analyzed using historical, sociological approach. Beside that, the write also uses film theory as literary work. It states that film is a part of xelectronic medium.

The result of analysis show that hip hop has been the strenght to make American have a good sozialication, reduce racialism. Finally this graduating paper proves that hip hop music has a good influnce toward American lifestyle. Because we know that lifestyle is a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and behavior of person or group. Every people have distinction meaning of lifestyle. ABSTRACT


Hegemony, the main concept of Gramsci, not only gives contribution in political field but also contribute idea in cultural analysis. He tries to formulate the relation between culture and class, explain some ways where culture can be a strategic place in making consensus, negotiating ideology and culture between dominant, and subordinate. This study is an attempt to describe cultural hegemony which is done by Nike Corporation as reflected in a literary work which is film entitled “Like Mike”.

The writer employs the interdisciplinary approach in the frame of American Studies discipline. Synthetics of knowledge theory was used for carrying out this thesis and supported by an interdisciplinary approach with a series of disciplines mainly history, cultural and sociology. This thesis was accomplished through qualitative method and supported by library research.

In this film, it is described that Nike Corporation as a ruling class tried to become a hegemonic class by establishing its hegemony. In line with Gramsci’s theory in reaching hegemony, ideology should be spread. In addition, media and organic intellectual are needed in doing this effort. Lastly, the result of this study reveals that Nike’s hegemony also gives great effect toward the structure of youth. Two factors that influence the structure of youth are concerning with appearance and ritual codes.

ABSTRACT

In this graduating paper, the writer chooses The American Freedom of the Press in the film The Pentagon paper, as title of the research. America, which applied democratic system, gives the freedom for all citizens to give their opinions, critics and suggestions. Press is an effective basket of them as medium which closely related to social life in American society. Press in democratic country like America is protected by the first amendment of basic American constitution. So, press has a freedom to collect some news without any pressure from the government. It indicates that press can not be disturbed by the some institution or government. From this freedom, press successfully reveals the secret of Vietnam War. In some non-democratic countries, press is used by some groups for specific purpose. From those phenomenons, the writer is very interested in analyzing the freedom of press in American society during the Vietnam War based on the film The Pentagon Papers.

This is study within the boundaries of American studies disciplines. Therefore, the interdisciplinary approach will be applied. In this study, the writer uses qualitative research because it is suitable with the methods of analyzing data of this thesis. In collecting data, the writer uses library research method. To analyze this topic, the writer uses McQuail, A. Graber and Rachmadi theories. McQuail and A. Garber theory is that to show the positions of press and its responsibility to the society. And theory of Rachmadi is to shows the functions of press in selected the issues and decide what issues important to inform to the public. Then, this study is also analyzed historically to explore the developing of press from the early time till during the Vietnam War.

The result of the study shows that the writer founds two important things in the freedom or the role of press. First, the functions of press in American society like press as a public educator, social control and mediator between public and government. Second, the internal and external impacts of the freedom of the press as visualized in the film The Pentagon Papers toward public, government and the structural press itself. In America, press has an important role to American people in giving an accurate information as guide of discourse and people’s opinion, as a medium to one other, group, even as a medium of public and government. Press is also as a media of social control to keep social stability. On other sides, press give some negative impacts toward social stability, such as a loss of public trust toward government and some neighboring countries.

The paper entitled Hedonist Lifestyle in Music as Reflected in “Rock Star” Film by Stephen Herek’s is a story about American rock musician who is correlated with lifestyle such as sex, drugs, and fashion. The aim of this paper is to figure out how exactly the hedonist lifestyle takes a part on rockers life and behavior. This paper is expected to clarify some facts about the rockers, the life, and also how they gain their dream. While the problem I found in this paper based on movie is how huge the influence of the hedonistic lifestyle for their life.

The subject of this graduating paper is a film entitled “Rock Star”. The object of this graduating paper itself focuses on the hedonist lifestyle in American rock musician. To complete the main data and information, the writer here uses a library research and read the books related to the topic. These supporting data in this graduating paper is taken from the article, journal, internet, and film review. The data was analyzed using American popular culture, sociological, and historical approach.

The important notes of this paper are viewed into point, that rocker tends to have these hedonist lifestyle as their way to raise freedom and idealism, which are sex, drugs, and fashion. Sex for them is rebellion who is breaking society norm and a fighting symbol of calmness, while drugs is manifestation of freedom and also the tool to socialize and to establish public image of which is powerful and hard life. While in fashion, it becomes image to perform their social and personal identity. They cannot increase their creativity without it, because it has become lifestyle in their life.

ABSTRACT

Dead Poets Society is the film that explore about the new English teacher in Welton Academic who gives a big influence toward his student in their life. His styles in teaching are unusual but his student very interested in him. In this papers, the writer attempt to explore the roles of teacher as reflected in Dead Poets Society. The writer applies Sociology, psychology and historical approaches to give clear analysis of the roles of teacher as reflected in Dead Poets Society the movie.

Sociology and psychology are used to explain the roles that are used by teacher in teaching and historical approach is used to explore all data that have links with American teacher in the past. This graduating paper was also done through library research. The data are taken from various sources; text book, newspaper, internet and some available printed master.

The result of this research reveals that American teacher have roles as facilitator, as delegator, and as personal models or demonstrator in the class. As facilitator, they have freedom to stimulate their teacher in the class such as freedom in discussing the subject in the class, freedom to controlling the learning process and freedom to develop the capacity for independent action. As delegator, teachers are free to rules their class with target to building team between the students, so the student ready to study. Those freedoms are used only to make teaching and learning process well done. As personal models teacher free to give an example what student should do in study.

ABSTRACT


This graduating paper entitled Social Conflicts as reflected in American Chai film. The research discusses the social conflict that happened in Indian Immigrants society in America.

This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The writer sees and analyzes primary data in the film American Chai. After getting the data and information, the writer employs library method by reading carefully and critically to get a deep comprehension about social conflict analysis. This study belongs to American Studies which suggested interdisciplinary approach. The writer uses two approaches for this research. The first approach is American Popular Culture approach. The writer uses this approach to know the content of American Chai film. And the second approach is sociological approach which is used to give clear analysis of social conflict of Indian Immigrants in America.

The social conflicts found in the film are strict parent and arranged marriage. From this research the writer concludes that the social conflict happened was a result of two cultures contradiction, between the long standing traditions of Indian culture and the relative freedoms of American culture. The social conflict happened in Indian American society surely give effects to every member’s society. The writer also found the effects of social conflict in the film. Those are depression, drinking alcohol and identity crisis.

ABSTRACT

The title of this graduating paper is American spirit in Striving for Success as seen in the film “Door To Door”. This study is American Study of a film entitled Door To Door. This film is based on a true story of Bill Porter who has cerebral palsy and because of his spirit he can get success in his life. The objectives of the study of this graduating paper are to explain the main character’s efforts to search success, to explain the American spirit in striving for success and to tell the obstructions which are faced by main character as seen in Door To Door film.

In analyzing this graduating paper the writer uses interdisciplinary study. An American study is interdisciplinary study. It means that studying American studies is not based on only one discipline but it can be from other discipline for example economy, sociology, history and the others. The statement of Edward Kearny about American values is used by the writer in this graduating paper. The main data of this graduating paper is Door To Door film and the supporting data are books, graduating papers, and internet.

After doing the research, the writer can conclude that American values become American spirit especially in getting success. Everyone has to face the obstructions in his or her life in order to get success. There are six basic values that have become “traditional” American values. In this graduating paper the writer uses three of six American values to do the research. The three values represent traditional reasons why immigrants have been drawn to America they are the chance for individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and material wealth. In order to achieve these benefits however, these were prices to be paid, self reliance, competition and hard work. American values inspired the main character in getting success in his life.

The title of this graduating paper is THE MORAL VALUES IN DREAM THEATRE’S SONG LYRICS IN ALBUM “SCENES FROM A MEMORY”. In this graduating paper, the writer discusses about the moral values in Dream Theatre especially in album Scene From A Memory. The objective of this study is to find out the moral values of Dream Theatre’s song lyrics in Scenes from A Memory album. The reason of why the writer choose this title, because the writer found much the moral message in Dream Theatre’s song lyrics in Scenes from A Memory album. In this study the writer takes the Dream Theatre’s song lyrics in Scenes from A Memory album as primary data. The secondary data is taken from magazines, some book, some sources from internet.

In analyzing and finding the moral value of Dream Theatre’s song the writer uses theory of moral value by Stanford, this theory is guide us how to know the differences of morality and immorality.

The results of this study shows the moral value in Dream Theatre’s song lirycs in album scene from a memory such as : Remember our Creator, keep away from drug, keep away from free sex , respect our brother or family, self-control, safe people live.

- The Change of Manners of American People as Reflected in Edward Albee’s The Sandbox




This research is intended to identify the kinds of change of American manners as reflected in the plays entitled The Sandbox by Edward Albee.

The subject of the study is drama entitled The Sandbox written by Edward Albee in 1960. It consists of six scenes and included in a book entitled Three Plays. The object of the research is focused on the setting and characters and the characterizations of the characters of the drama. This research uses the descriptive qualitative technique to analyze the character and characterization. To analyze the data, the writer employs the intrinsic theory. The changes of manners reflected in the script of play are all regarded as the main data and some data available in the internet to find out information about plot and the author as regarded as the supporting data.
Based on the intrinsic theory, there are many changes of American manners which are reflected by the characters in the plays and they can be summarized as follows, that is: Mommy gives a command to Daddy, Mommy and Daddy to bring Grandma and put her on the sandbox, Grandma insults her daughter, Mommy is sad with the death of Grandma, Mommy lets Grandma lay on the sandbox, Mommy changes her feeling to be optimistic, The Young Man cares for Grandma, and Grandma died in happiness.
