Genomes and Genomics of Nitrogen-fixing Organisms (Nitrogen Fixation: Origins, Applications, and Research Progress)

Genomes and Genomics of Nitrogen-fixing Organisms (Nitrogen Fixation: Origins, Applications, and Research Progress)

Description

This book is the self-contained third volume of a comprehensive series on nitrogen fixation. It presents the state-of-the-art in regards to genomic sciences applied to nitrogen-fixation research. The advent of genomic sciences represents a new era for biology. The classic paradigm based on the gene has now changed to a paradigm that is based on the genome. The knowledge of the complete nucleotide sequence of a genome and its consequences with regard to both transcription and translation lead to an integral and comprehensive view of the biochemistry and physiology of an organism. Moreover, comparative genomic studies provide new insights for a better understanding of the evolutionary process. Nitrogen-fixation research has fully entered the genomics era since the first complete nucleotide sequences of a rhizobial symbiotic plasmid and a methanogenic archaeon were first reported in 1997.

Now, the complete nucleotide sequences of many genomes of nitrogen-fixing organism from different taxonomic groups are available. This volume includes chapters devoted to the genomes of specific organisms as well as chapters that cross organismal lines and analyse general aspects centred on functional genomics, genome dynamics, taxonomy, and evolution. No other available work provides the up-to-date and in-depth coverage of this volume, which is intended to serve as an indispensable reference work for academic, governmental, and industrial scientists working in the areas of genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, including those studying evolution and taxonomy; to assist students to enter this challenging area of research; and to provide science administrators with ready access to vital relevant information.

The Basics of Social Research

The Basics of Social Research

Description
This thorough revision of Babbie's standard-setting book presents a succinct, straightforward introduction to the field of research methods as practiced by social scientists. Contemporary examples+such as terrorism, Alzheimer's disease, anti-gay prejudice and education, and the legalization of marijuana make this Fourth Edition thoroughly fascinating as it introduces you to the "how-tos" and "whys" of social research methods. The book's new qualitative coverage combined with its already strong quantitative material makes this new edition Babbie's best yet. Babbie, long respected in the field and renowned for his engaging and friendly writing style, gives you the tools you need for understanding social research methods and for applying these concepts both inside and outside the classroom+as a researcher and as a consumer of research. With a strong emphasis on ethics and additional qualitative material, this Fourth Edition is authoritative yet student-friendly . . . and engaging enough to help you connect the dots between the world of social research and the real world.

Review
Melanie Arthur, Portland State University; The organization of the chapter is very good+beginning from the theory link which is particularly important for qualitative analysis, and proceeding through coding to the concrete application of qualitative data analysis software. This provides a good basic framework for students who are faced with a pile of qualitative data that they don’t know how to start analyzing. Babbie’s personal, approachable writing style is one of the best characteristics of the book. Students appreciate the personal approach he uses. It makes technical material much easier to digest and much less intimidating." "A readable, solid research text. The best out there."

Gary Watt, Emporia State University; "Babbie has the best brief coverage of sampling that I have seen."

James W. Cassell, Henderson State University; "The narrative in Chapter 1 is quite engaging. I particularly like the examples that help students see the differences in types of enquiry and knowledge we use and act upon in everyday life."

Leslie Hossfeld, UNC-Wilmington; "I am very pleased to see the early introduction of variables and attributes in Chapter 1, especially given that these are examined in greater detail later. Students need to see this early in the Methods course, and other texts don’t introduce these concepts early."; "The brief discuss of pure and applied research is refreshing…"; "The Babbie chapter is very good in helping students see the way in which qualitative analysis is an on-going process and that, indeed, coding is analysis! I am chiefly impressed by the inclusion of actual passages that are coded. This is remarkably helpful to students."

Rebecca Utz, University of Utah; "The writing is very clear. I enjoy the rhetorical questioning that the author has used throughout the text. I also appreciate the clarity and simplicity of the word choice."

The Practice of Social Research

The Practice of Social Research

Description
This thorough revision of Babbie's standard-setting book for the course (known as the "Bible of social research methods") offers students a comprehensive, straightforward introduction to the field of research methods as practiced by sociologists and other social scientists. Emphasizing the importance of the research process, the book shows students how social scientists design research studies, introduces the variety of observation modes used by sociologists, and covers the "how-to's" and "whys" of social research methods. The 11th edition provides students with the necessary tools for understanding social research methods and for applying these concepts both inside and outside the classroom--as researchers and as consumers of research.

Review
"The biggest strength of this book is that it is well written and students find it very approachable. The use of examples is excellent and aids very much in conveying difficult concepts and ideas."

"The principle strength of the Babbie text is its balance of technical information and accessibility for students as well as a balanced presentation of qualitative and quantitative research methods…the use of humor in this text is also an enormous asset. I really liked this text – it its approach, presentation, and tenor."

"It is the best methods text – nothing is close to this – over the years it has been perfected."

"This is a very fine textbook in terms of content and style. Babbie covers the key aspects of sociological research methods in a well-organized manner. The book is very well-written and engaging. The examples are interesting, informative, and up to date."

Qualitative Research & Evaluation Methods

Qualitative Research & Evaluation Methods

Review

"Paton has a distinguished career as an evaluation researcher and his experience in applying the tools of qualitative research to address the questions and concerns of those in the world of practice come through clearly… a gem of a discussion of sampling strategies in qualitative research that is useful not only to prospective researchers but also to more seasoned ones. It is the most complete and carefully reasoned consideration of sampling in qualitative research that I have encountered"
(Organizational Research Methods )

Review : By Steven Ro
If you've been asked to gather qualitative research but you've never gathered qualitative research before, then this is the book for you. Unlike other qualitative research books that often focus more on a particular phase of research, this book covers all phases in depth, from conceptual issues and qualitative reseach design to analysis, interpretation, and reporting. If you were to read this book from cover to cover you would enjoy it, but you may yawn once or twice. To ease the boredom factor, the author was kind enough to include jokes and cartoons and sage anecdotes from research guru Halcolm. If you just want to use this book to answer particular research questions, then this is also the right book for you. I've looked at several other qualitative research books and this one seems to address all the major questions a researcher could possibly have. I highly recommend this book for any and all qualitative research neophytes.

Authoring a PhD Thesis: How to Plan, Draft, Write and Finish a Doctoral Dissertation

Authoring a PhD Thesis: How to Plan, Draft, Write and Finish a Doctoral Dissertation

Review : By Shannon McCabe (Albuquerque, NM United States)

This book is an excellent guide for anyone in the process of writing a dissertation. Although he is writing from a British point of view, he takes care to make his advice applicable to the dissertation writer in the US university system as well. He discusses structure, drafting, editing, as well as how to prepare the diss for eventual publication.

The main achievement of this book is the idea that the dissertation writer is taking on another role, moving from *student writer* to *writer*. The dissertation propels the student into the position of colleague in training, and the writing is the vehicle for doing that. For the first time, thanks to this book, I have begun to look at myself as a writer contributing to the body of knowledge on the subject, not just a student producing yet another required paper to please a professor.

Review : By Graeme C. Simsion (Melbourne, Australia)

Over the four years I spent working on my PhD, I must have read hundreds of papers and substantial parts of many books. In terms of the quality of the finished thesis, this little book was probably the most important. Lots of good, practical advice, even for an experienced writer: schedule a full re-read before giving it to the supervisor for review (they'll add more value if they're not fixing things you could fix yourself); re-write the introduction every six weeks; advice on how examiners read theses (and hence where to put the extra effort). The section on writing the conclusions was a big help in getting the job finished. The section devoted to effective use of word processors is probably redundant for most of us: but there are enough nuggets in the rest of the book to more than compensate. My only regret is that I didn't purchase it at the beginning instead of half-way through when a fellow student recommended it.

How to Write a Thesis

How to Write a Thesis

Description
"How to Write a Thesis can be read with profit by anyone who writes professionally, whether proposals, reports, monographs or a thesis. It is oriented to someone writing a PhD thesis, but has a lot to say about writing in general. It deals with the process of writing rather than detailed content, and is applicable regardless of discipline" SRA

"This is the book that all PhD supervisors and their students have been waiting for: the first comprehensive overview of the many different writing practices, and processes, involved in the production of a doctoral thesis. Crammed full of explanations, shortcuts and tips, this book demystifies academic writing in one fell swoop. Everyone who reads it will be massively enabled as a writer." Professor Lynne Pearce, Associate Dean for Postgraduate Teaching, University of Lancaster

"Rowena Murray's down-to-earth approach both recognises and relieves some of the agony of writing a PhD. The advice in this book is both practical and motivational; sometimes it's 'PhD-saving' too. By using Rowena Murray's techniques of regular snacking, instead of occasional bingeing, I managed to rescue my PhD from near-death at a time of work overload." Christine Sinclair, Part-time PhD student and lecturer in Educational Development, University of Paisley

This book evolved from fifteen years' experience of teaching thesis writing. The contents have been tried and tested with postgraduates and academics. Early chapters explore the ambiguities and subtleties of thesis writing in detail. Later chapters are more compact, listing steps in the writing process. All chapters provide examples to illustrate techniques and activities to progress writing.

When writing a thesis, students must be ready to develop new modes of writing. The harsh reality is that those who like to work to goals are likely to have to submit to floundering around, reconstructing their well laid plans, whilst those who hate to be driven by goals, or do not see the point of them, will have to submit to deadlines and milestones that may seem like millstones.

This book will help all students cope with the challenges inherent in writing a thesis.

Second, Rosa Liksom’s One Night Stand is a novel that gives new insight on literary study, since it is considered as punk literature, it is quiet different with other novel that talks about romance or tragedy written by English author. The third, there are some moral values of the novel that can be taken. The objective of this research are to describe the kinds of permissive culture, to describe the reasons of permissive culture, and to find the moral values that can be taken from Rosa Liksom’s One Night Stand.

In this research, the writer performs descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research is the novel One Night Stand which consists of forty three short stories written by Rosa Liksom. The object of the research is focused on permissive culture in 1980’s as describe in the novel. This research is grouped into a library research. The primary source is the novel entitles One Night Stand, while the secondary sources are any books in relation to the study. The data of the research are gathered through observation and documentation The writer also takes the data from the internet. Finally, they are analyzed by using the socio-cultural approach proposed by Faruk (1994).

The result of the research shows that the permissive culture in European society in 1980’s era such as free sex, cohabitation, lesbian and homosexual, juvenile delinquency, drinking habit, woman smoking, drug and narcotics habit caused by environmental influences, the lack of the family rules, freedom in all aspects of life and biological factor. The moral values that can be found in One Night Stand are permissive culture is a form of human morality degradation and it should not be transferred nor being developed by other countries. Family plays an important role in controlling their children to be far from any kinds of permissiveness. Parents must pay more attention to their children and concern in all their children’s balance life. Sex education is important to be taught by young people so that they can avoid it and far from the bad effects of free sex. Government should give freedom to the citizens in a right place, and give freedom by considering moral values, religion rules, and norm that should be obeyed by all citizens.

SOCIAL CONDITION IN EARLY 20Th CENTURY AMERICAN AS REFLECTED IN LAVYRLE SPENSER’S THAT CAMDEN SUMMER

By
Eka Oktaria Rini
NIM 03026032

Abstract

The title of this research is Social Condition in Early 20th Century as Reflected Lavyrle Spenser’s That Camden Summer. Social issues are matters directly or indirectly after many or all of society and are considered to be problems, controversial related moral values or both. The aim of this research is to analyze the social condition in America in early 20th century and comparing it with the real condition of American society in early 20th century by using mimetic approach.

In this research, the writer uses mimetic concept to analyze the novel. To collect the data, the writer searches many libraries, does critical reading of the novel and reads several related books. Besides using library research, the writer also take the data from internet. Then the data are collected, and are analyzed by using descriptive, qualitative techniques to give a clear explanation of the objectives of study.

Based on the research, the writer obtains some significant findings. The novel That Camden Summer brings some values to be understood, the social condition is very complicated, and the discrimination problem especially about women happen from long time ago. In this time the woman discrimination always happens in American society although feminist has existed. In this time education for women began to be important. The girls not only learn from her mother but they get formal education similar to the boys. Society is a grouping of individuals which is characterized by common interests and may have distinctive culture and institutions. And the development of technology is very fast as the effect of industrial revolution. Car and telephone is the symbol of modern American lifestyle in early 20th century. Women fashion in this time is influenced by the advent of the automobile. American people read the newspaper has to get information and entertainment. American people get entertainment by watching theater, going to piano concerts and going to picnic. American party is social gathering for celebration and recreation. Many American families only gather all at once around the dinner table.
