ABSTRACT

The title of this research is The Portraits of Culture Shocks of Chinese Family Living Among American Society as seen in Amy Tan The Kitchen God’s Wife. The purpose of this graduating paper is to know the American culture, Chinese culture and cultural shocks in Chinese family living in American society.

The writer uses American studies approach from Mc Dowell which stresses a past, present, and future approach an interdisciplinary approach from Robert Meredith that focused on history, sociology and culture. In this research the writer uses qualitative method to analyze the obtained data. Qualitative method describes the discussion in detail. There are two kinds’ data. The main data which is collected from the novel the kitchen god’s wife by Amy Tan and the supporting data which is obtained from the books, article, internet and everything.

The result of this study shows that American cultures of The Kitchen God’s Wife such as individualism, competitiveness and privacy. And Chinese cultures are friendship, solidarity, and keep tradition. Another result of this research is research culture shock in The Kitchen God’s Wife novel. It caused by a physical difference, environment, and cultural difference. It generates sorrowful feelings, confuse, and nervous.
