A PRAGMATIC STUDY ON THE USE OF ENGLISH COMMAND IN CHARLES DICKEN’S OLIVER TWIST

ABSTRACT


The objective of the study is to find out the commands stated in the novel Oliver Twist, to know why the speaker uses those commands, to know whether the setting in the novel influences the English command and to find out the degree of appearances of English commands in the novel Oliver Twist.

This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data are the English commands used in that novel. All the data analyzed based on pragmatic theory. In collecting the data the writer uses noting technique and changing technique. The writer uses the descriptive method to analyze and to describe the data because in descriptive method the data will be gathered in the form of sentences.

Based on the result of the study the writer gets three kinds of commands. They are statements, questions and real commands. Statement as commands can be divided into three parts. They are commands with complete statement, commands with incomplete statement, and commands with let. Questions as commands can be divided into three parts too. They are commands with full question forms, commands with short question forms, and commands with negative commands. Real commands are divided into positive commands and negative commands. The highest frequency of commands is real commands. The number of these commands is 25 or 58.14% of the total number. The medium size of these commands is questions. The number of these commands is 10 or 23.26% from the total number. And then the lowest frequency of this command is statements. The number of these commands is 8 or 18.6%.
