ABSTRACT
This Thesis is aimed at revealing possible difficulties and their probable causes of the problems in doing reading section of regional TOIEC test held at 24 February 2006 for SMK Yappi Students in Wonosari district.
The population of the research involved 4 classes in the third class, who took regional TOEIC test administrated at 25 December 2005, that the researcher takes sample in this research. The tests item difficulties can be calculated in four scales category. These are the bases to analyze this data. The description of the data is presented qualitatively and quantitatively.
Based on the calculation and four scaled category, among 100 test items,27 % are categorized into very difficult, 69% are categorized into difficult, 4% are categorized into average, 0 % are categorized into easy and 0% are category into very easy. They are spread in all parts. The most difficult is part VI followed by part VII, and the last is part V. They are Error Recognition, Reading Comprehension and Incompletes Sentences. The data shows the population’s difficulties with various form of the stimuli and responses in the test. The exact difficulties can’t be identified – neither can what element in the stimuli and responses the difficulties appear whether the grammatical structure, the topic or words in context. Since the content has broader coverage that the first, the writer quotes the context found in difficult and very difficult test in all parts of the reading section. Their difficulties can be caused by main factors. However, those factors were categorized into two parts in this research. They are (1) the inside of the main factor, and (2) the outside of the head factors.
