A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY ON JACK SCHAEFER’S FIRST BLOOD AND MAVERICKS

ABSTRACT


The title of this thesis is “A Sociological Study On Jack Schaefer’s First Blood and Mavericks “. This study is a literary study of a novel entitled First Blood and Mavericks written by Jack Schaefer, a famous novelist of the 1980 s. The writer of this thesis wants to : 1) describe the social condition of American society in the First Blood and Mavericks, 2) describe the system of law in the company which is shown in the First Blood and Mavericks.

The method of the study is based on the library research. The main data in this study is First Blood and Mavericks novel. The source of the data is primary source and secondary source. The writer takes the materials which are relevant to the analysis. After the data are collected they will be analyzed and interpreted by using theory of sociology of literature by Wellek and Warren (1956), and Bustami Subhan (2003).

Some of the important research findings are stated as follow : the American society as described by the First Blood and Mavericks is divided into three elements classes; they are : upper class, middle class, and lower class. The upper class was represented by Tom Davisson; the middle class was represented by Doctor Schlegel, Dodd Burnett, and Bert Foley; and the lower class was represented Russ Thorp. The law system in the company of American society needs law and also the way together for saving the life. The crime like murder and whip are done by judges. The system is regulated by social norms that prescribe special roles for the occupants of different social position.
