THE SYMBOLS OF LOVE IN ROBERT BURNS’S MY LOVE : A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT




The title of this research is “The Symbols of Love in Robert Burns My Love: A Semiotic Analysis. This study is a literary study of a poem entitled My Love written by Robert Burns, a famous and outstanding poet in the era of 1700’s. The writer of this thesis focuses her thesis on two things: 1). the symbols and imageries used and shown in the poem, and 2). the hidden and inside meaning of every single word, line and stanza of the poem.

The method of the study is based on the library research, and the main data in this study is the poem of My Love. The writer takes the materials which are relevant to the analysis. After all of the data are collected they will be analyzed and interpreted by using the theory of semiotic developed by Michael Riffaterre.

There are three important points resulted from this study. The first point is the explication of the elements of the poem. Those elements are theme, setting, intention, imagery, comparison, diction, sound and tone. The second point is about the signs implied in the poem. Those signs are the title of the poem, the symbols of admiration to women, the symbols of spirit to love, and the symbols of promises. The third point is the advantages of studying the poem. By reading this poem one will learn how to treat what God has given to her/him, namely the beauty, love, and life.
