- THE EFFORT OF KING LOUIS XIV TO HIDE HIS CRUELTY AS REFLECTED IN ALEXANDRE DUMAS’S THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK: A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY

ABSTRACT

The title of the thesis is “ The Effort of King Louis XIV to Hide His Cruelty as Reflected in Alexandre Dumas’s The Man in The Iron Mask: A Sociological Study”. The research discusses the cruelty of King Louis XIV that happen as long as he was in throne as reflected in the novel The Man in The Iron Mask.

The method of the study is based on the library research in which the data are taken from the books, magazine, newspaper and internet. The data are classified into main and supporting data. The main data are taken from the novel itself and the supporting data are taken from the sources which are related with and support the subject matter of the study. After the data are gathered they will be analyzed by the theory of character and characterization by Subhan (2003), and the theory of cruelty by Freud (1924). The sociological study is used as the main basis of the analysis by Atar Semi (1990).

After having analyzed the novel, the characterization of King Louis XIV the main character, described as cruel, arrogant, callousness, egoist, jealous but lover. Meanwhile the source of the cruelty is coming from his identical twin brother, Philippe, Raoul, and the four musketeers, Athos, Porthos, Aramis and his captain d’Artagnan. Philippe had a simple crime as the twins of his brother, the king. The king is jealous with Raoul who was La Valliere lover. Athos was the father of Raoul. He wants to take revenge to the king. Porthos helps his friends. Aramis as the general Jesuits and the leader of the rebel organization is plotting a conspiracy against the king and replace him with Philippe. D’Artagnan, the captain of the musketeers and loyal to the king, ordered to take arrest and killed all of his friends. The king became very cruel. Finally, he found the effort to hide his cruelty.
