MORALITY AND THE ROLE OF RELIGION IN NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE’S THE SCARLET LETTER

ABSTRACT

The Scarlet Letter was one of the great works that ever written by Nathaniel Hawthorne on 1950. It is a classic novel which read by many readers in the world. To analyze this Novel, the writer uses descriptive qualitative which takes the title of this research entitled “Morality and the Role of Religion in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter”. The reason of taking this title is the writer finds the existence of various deeds that have become a part of each Character’s moral, whereas moral itself is inseparable conduct and faith of religion.

Through those reason the writer means to do research toward the Scarlet letter. And the used method is descriptive qualitative method. Moreover, observation and documentation is another the method. In addition to this research, the writer also discusses character and characterization as information about each character in the Scarlet letter. The information tells about characteristic of each character.

The Result of the research are stated as follow: (1).The moral itself inseparable from religion (2) Religion doctrines has great role in controlling the moral (3) moral is the conduct that covers good behavior and bad behavior (4) puritan people always use religion as their way of live. (5) Religion influences the government and social system for puritan community.
