- The Psychological Analysis Of The Protagonist Character in Henry Fielding Tom Jones




This research entitles The Psychological Analysis of the Protagonist Character in Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones. This research is dealing with the psychological study of the protagonist character in the novel Tom Jones focusing on the characterization and the factors that influence the protagonist character of the novel.

In this research, the writer uses the psychological approach to analyze the characterization of the protagonist Tom Jones. The method that is used in this research is the library method and internet technology method. The writer reads carefully and critically in order to know the description of the character and characterization of the novel. After the data are collected, they are analyzed by using the theory of psychology of literature by Abram’s in Teew (1984: 50) and the psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud (1974: 73).

Some of the important research findings are stated as follows. First, the characterization of the protagonist character, Mr. Tom Jones. He is a romantic, an autonomous, consistent, tolerant, and gentleman. Second, the psychological factors that influence to the characterization the protagonist (Mr. Jones).
Based on to Freud’s theory, there are three aspects which influence to the personality: (1) The biological aspect (the Id), the nature trait of Tom that was brought since he born such as a handsome, an autonomous, stubborn, and unpretentious. (2) The psychological aspect (the Ego), the ego of Tom were influenced by his conflict, scandal by marrying his wife’s maid and friend Marry Daniel. (3) The sociological aspect (the Super ego), Tom feels that he has done the mistakes one of them is his affair with another woman. He just loves one lady, Sophia Western.

Based on to Carl Gustav Jung in his “analytical psychology” theory, the protagonist character of Tom Jones has a good behavior, good performance and good personality. He is an extrovert person. He is a person who more interested in what goes on around him than in his own thought and feeling (lovely and cheerful people).
