- A Study on the Mastery of English Singular and Plural Nouns by the Second Year Students of SMK Muhammadiyah I, Nitikan Yogyakarta

Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the students’ mastery in using singular and plural nouns of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah I, Nitikan Yogyakarta in the 2005/2006 Academic Year; (2) to find the points of singular and plural nouns which are considered to be the problem by the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah I, Nitikan Yogyakarta in the 2005/2006 Academic Year.

The population and sample of this research are the second grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah I, Nitikan Yogyakarta in the 2005/2006 Academic Years. The total number of population is 78 students. The validity of the instrument is measured using Karl Pearson’s product moment correlation and for the reliability of the test the writer uses the Alpha Croanbach Formula. In analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive analysis. The data are taken by using a test.

The result shows that there are 6 students or 7,69% whose mastery belong to a very good category, 5 students or 6.41% are classified into good, and 15 students or 19.23 % have a fair category, 19 students or 24.35 % who falls into a poor category and 33 students or 42.30% who get a very poor category. The data analysis shows that he mean of the student score is 15.50 with the standard deviation 7.69. Thus the ideal mean of the students of the score is 21.6 while the ideal standard deviation is 5.4. The mean is lower than that of the ideal mean (15.50 <>
