ABSTRACT
This research is entitled An Analysis of Character and Characterization in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring A Structural Approach. The writer is motivated to choose the novel because a few reasons; first, in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring has relations to the folklore and myth. Second, in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring is famous literary work and has been made into film version. Third, in the novel J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring was published with various languages. The aims of the research are; (1) to describe character and characterization the Fellowship of the Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring, and (2) to describe comparison between character and characterization the Fellowship of the Ring in .R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring.
To analyze the character and characterization, the researcher employs the structural approach. The subject of this research is J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring. To fulfill the needed data and information, the researcher employs library research done by reading many bibliographies, critically and comprehensively. After the data are collected, they are analyzed by using the structural approach as the main approach to research the character and characterization the Fellowship of the Ring in the novel.
Base on the discussion it can be concluded that; (1) the character and characterization every member in the Fellowship of the Ring are Frodo Baggins, has three characters, emotional, wise, and smart, Gandalf the Grey he has characterization as a Wizard with the wise characterization for goodness, Sam Gamgee have two dominant characterization, which are smart characterization and loyal Aragorn (Strider) has wise characterization, Merry has two dominant characterization they are smart and loyalty, Pippin has two dominant characterization they are loyalty and curiosity, Legolas has dominant character responsive character in act, Gimli has dominant character which is bravery character, and Boromir has two dominant characters that are conceited and bravery, (2) the comparison between character and characterization the Fellowship of the Ring, the writer has one character as a perfect character that is Gandalf the Grey that was wisdom. Frodo has good characterization development because Frodo have to learn growing the best personality development.
