A SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH SENTENCES USED IN KANGGURU MAGAZINE

ABSTRACT

The research entitled A Syntactic Analysis of English Sentences Used in Kangguru Magazine is intended to describe English sentences used in Kangguru magazine. The discussion involves types of sentence, patterns of sentence and type of sentence which is frequently used in Kangguru magazine.

The research is a qualitative research by using noting technique as method of collecting data. This research also applies structural analytic and distributional methods as method of analyzing data. The writer analyzes the English sentences used in Kangguru magazine through these methods. Then they are identified based on their types of sentence and their patterns of sentence. Syntactic analysis is applied in this research to analyze types of sentence and patterns of sentence used in Kangguru magazine.

The result of the study shows that types of sentence used in Kangguru magazine include simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence and compound-complex sentence. The writer also finds that patterns of sentence used in Kangguru magazine involve SV, SVA, SVC, SVO, SVOC, SVIODO and SVOA. The end of the analysis shows that Kangguru magazine often uses simple sentence in its writing. Simple sentence used in Kangguru magazine takes place 65 % of amount of sentences in the magazine. It means that Kangguru magazine tries to give information by using language which is easier to be understood by the readers, so the readers can get information easily from Kangguru magazine. However, pattern of sentence which is frequently used in Kangguru magazine is SVO.
