THE LOVE TRAGEDIES IN AJIP ROSIDI’S RORO MENDUT AND WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S ROMEO AND JULIET A COMPARATIVE STUDY

ABSTRACT

This thesis entitled The Love Tragedies in Ajip Rosidi’s Roro Mendut and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: A Comparative Study is intended to answer the objectives of the research: 1) to describe the love tragedies in Ajip Rosidi’s Roro Mendut and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and 2) to describe the differences and the similarities between the love tragedies in Ajip Rosidi’s Roro Mendut and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The subject of the research are Ajip Rosidi’s Roro Mendut and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and the object of the research is the love tragedy and its the differences and similarity two works. The type of this research is a library research. The data is qualitative method. The data collecting technique used in the research reading the works repeatedly, the next is visiting the library to get more references. After the data are collected, they are analyzed by using a comparative study by Guillen.

Some important research findings on this research are follows. There are seven situations in Guillen’s theory that can be found in the works Roro Mendut and Romeo and Juliet, they are: (1) The Specific Circumstance and the World are the love story from local to the world and international, (2) The Present and the absent are the lovers came from different status and clans but they loved each other, (3) The experience and Its sense are the lovers have irrational thinking, violate rules, and do everything to take love, (4) The I and Whatever is alient to it are the struggles of the lovers to unite their love although they should face many obstacles, (5) The Perceived and The Longed For are the lovers were difficult to unite love however they wanted to live together, happiness and freedom in their love together, (6) What is and What should be the lovers have experienced restraint of love although love should be free for the lovers, (7) What exists today and what is eternal are In the works, Roro Mendut and Romeo and Juliet, the lovers got suffering to keep their love and they brought their endless love until died.
