A SEMANTIC STUDY OF AMERICAN SLANGS USED IN TONI ANN JOHNSON’S AND KAREN BARNA’S STEP UP 2 THE STREETS

ABSTRACT

This study entitled “A Semantic Study of American Slangs Used in Toni Ann Johnson’s and Karen Barna’s Step Up 2 The Streets” is to find out the forms of American Slangs used in Step Up 2 The Streets, and the meanings of American Slangs which are found in Step Up 2 The Streets.


This research is in qualitative research. The objects of this research are American Slangs which appear in Step Up 2 The Streets Movie. To collect the data, the researcher conducted the following procedures; a) watching Step Up 2 The Streets Movie, b) taking a note on the scripts of Step Up 2 The Streets Movie, c) printing the scripts of Step Up 2 The Streets Movie, d) making a file of figures of speech used in Step Up 2 The Streets Movie. In analyzing the data, the researcher selected the American Slangs from the script of Step Up 2 The Streets Movie, found the forms and meanings of American Slangs used in Step Up 2 The Streets Movie and drew conclusion.

The result of this research shows that the forms of words which are found in this research are in the forms of verb and adjective. The phrases that the researcher finds are noun phrase, verb phrase, adverb phrase, and prepositional phrase. The sentences that the researcher finds are declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative sentence and exclamatory sentence. The meanings which are found are in forms of words (verb and adjective), phrases (noun phrase, verb phrase, adverb phrase and prepositional) and sentences (declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative sentence and exclamatory sentence).
