AN ANALYSIS ON JARGON LANGUAGE USED IN DAVID WILKERSON’S THE CROSS AND THE SWITCHBLADE: A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY

ABSTRACT

The research entitled An Analysis on Jargon Language Used in David Wilkerson’s The Cross and The Switchblade is intended to find out the types, the meanings, and the functions of jargon in The Cross and The Switchblade novel by David Wilkerson.
   

 This type of research belongs to qualitative research. The writer takes data from the novel The Cross and The Switchblade novel by David Wilkerson. The supporting data are taken from some books and internet. In collecting data, noting technique and separating technique are used. The technique of analyzing data is qualitative technique; therefore the object of the research is in the form of word, not in number.

The result of the research shows that the types of jargon in The Cross and The Switchblade novel are 329 data (100%). The highest occurrence of type of jargon is the religious jargon frequency of occurrences 104 or 31.61%. It is followed by legal jargon with frequency of 73 or 22.18%. The next type is medical with frequency of 49 or 14.189%, in the news media jargon with frequency of 24 or 7.29%, the next type is scientific with frequency of 20 or 6.07%, then teaching with frequency of 18 or 5.47%, military with frequency of 16 or 4.86%, journalist of 7 or 2.12 frequency, banking and sport have the same frequency is 6 or 1.82%, broadcasting of 3 or 0.91% frequency, advertising have 2 or 0.6% frequency and the last is politic jargon with frequency 1 or 0.3%. 

The meaning of jargon in The Cross and The Switchblade novel consist of denotative meaning has 265 features or 80.55% and connotative meaning has 64 features or 19.45%. The function of jargon in The Cross and The Switchblade novel shows 77.81% or 256 features have function to make easier for a person to communicate with their friends and 22.19% or 73features have function to give a person a sense of belonging to a specific group.
