A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON ENGLISH AND JAVANESE INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

ABSTRACT

The study entitled “A Comparative Study on English and Javanese Interrogative Sentences” is intended to describe the forms of interrogative sentences in English and Javanese, the similarities between interrogative sentences in English and Javanese, and their differences.
 This research belongs to a comparative qualitative research. This research belongs to qualitative research because it does not use any statistical procedure. The data of this research are taken from English and Javanese grammar books. In collecting the data, the writer uses noting technique, separating technique, and changing techniques. In analyzing the data, the writer makes description, analysis and interpretation.
The result of this research shows that there are three forms of English Interrogative sentences; yes no question, wh question and tag question. In Javanese, the writer finds three forms of interrogative sentences; question word, question particles, and alternative question. The similarities between interrogative sentences in English and Javanese lie on their types of interrogative sentences and the position of question word. The differences between English and Javanese interrogative sentence lie on the existence of auxiliary verb and the position of question words.
