ABSTRACT

This research is descriptive qualitative. The objectives of this research are to describe the grammatical errors and possible sources of errors which occur in bilingual translation.

The population of the research is the fourth semester students of translation class of English Letters Department of Ahmad Dahlan University in 2006-2007 Academic Year. Yet, the number of the population that is more than 100 students makes the writer only take some of them as the sample. The sample of this research is 35 % of the total population (42 students). To gather the data, the researcher uses an observation method and documentation method. She collects all translation works of students’ final examination from Indonesian into English. In addition, to analyze the data, the researcher uses Structural Analysis Method. Furthermore, she uses syntactic analysis as theoretical approach to do the research.

The result of this research shows that there are 158 grammatical errors consisting of 72 errors in misformation, 41 errors in addition, 33 errors in omission, and 12 errors in misordering. Moreover, the other result is that the researcher finds some possible sources of errors in this research. They are language transfer, intralingual transfer (overgeneralization, ignorance of the rule restriction, incomplete application of rules, and false concepts hypothesized), and word-to-word translation.
