ABSTRACT

This research entitled “A Diction Error Analysis in Sentence Writing Made by the Second Semester Students of English Education Study Program of Ahmad Dahlan University in 2004/2005 Academic Year: A Case Study” is intended to find out the diction errors. The diction error will be analyzed to find its type and its causes.

This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Source of data of this research is the final exam students’ worksheets collected from the course of writing II randomly. The writer takes the diction errors from writing exercises of the second semester students of English Education Study Program of Ahmad Dahlan University in 2004/2005 Academic Year.

The result of the study shows that the students are still influenced by L1, so they make mistranslation. Mistranslation is caused by the limited knowledge about the grammar of L2, or the limited of students’ vocabulary mastery. Then many students put a word, subject, verb object, complement, or clause in the wrong place, so they make misplacement. Misplacement happens because of the limited students’ knowledge about English sentence structure. The last is that many students choose the unappropriate noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and pronoun, so they made mischoice of words. Mischoice of words happens because the student has not mastered the needed vocabulary.
