ABSTRACT
The research entitled The Solidarity and Politeness Applied by the Main Character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ part three: The Return of the King is intended to find out the types of the solidarity and politeness strategies, the application of the solidarity and politeness by the main character, Aragorn, in JRR Tolkien’s novel above and the cause that probably influence the Aragorn’s solidarity and politeness strategies.
This research belongs to qualitative research. It does not use any statistical procedure. The techniques used in collecting data are noting, separating and changing techniques. The research object is the 112 utterances of Aragorn in JRR Tolkien’s novel mentioned above. The data analysis is done by using descriptive technique.
The result of this study shows that Aragorn uses solidarity marker of address term with no name in most (73 utterances), followed by address term name or nick name (18 utterances), title alone (17 utterances) and title and first or last name (4 utterances). The negative politeness strategy is used more often than positive politeness strategy. This use of negative politeness strategy is classified into three, using sentence (59 utterances), phrase (6 utterances; pronoun, adjective, infinitive, noun and 2 verb phrases) and using word (21 utterances). The positive politeness strategy used is also categorized in the same way. Sentences are in these positive moves are (15 utterances) followed by the word (7 utterances) and phrase (4 utterances; 2 noun and 2 verb phrases). The probable cause of Aragorn’s solidarity and politeness strategies choice is the social status and the social distance. The social status factors consist of family relationship, friendship, superiority, inferiority and companion. The social distance factor includes into race, sex (gender), age and occupation.
