A SEMANTIC STUDY OF CONNOTATIVE MEANING IN ROXETTE’S SONGS

ABSTRACT


The research entitled A Semantic Study of Connotative Meaning in Roxette’s Songs is intended to describe the linguistic units conveying the connotative meaning, the function of using connotative meaning in the songs, and the context which lead the connotative meaning in Roxette’s songs.

This research belongs to qualitative research. The use of qualitative method is suitable with methods of analyzing data of this graduating paper. The data of this research are the words, phrases, and sentences of Roxette’s song lyrics that have connotative meaning. The writer analyzes four songs from Roxette’s album 16 Top Hits. The songs are Fading Like a Flower, Queen of Rain, Sleeping in My Car, and It Must Have Been Love. In collecting data, the writer uses library technique, observation and note technique. The writer reads the data from Roxette’s song text, they are read and observed carefully to find out the connotative meaning in certain words. The data are signed and written down on data cards. The method of analyzing data used in this research is referential (identity) method.

The result of this research shows that the linguistic units which have connotative meaning in the lyrics of Roxette’s songs are words and phrases. The functions of connotative meanings of Roxette’s song lyrics are to make the message more impressive and romantic, to know the message of the whole songs and to make message more beautiful and suitable. The context of connotative meaning is divided into two, they are linguistic context and situational context.
