THE ABUSE OF POWER BY KING LOUIS XIV IN FRENCH SOCIETY AS REFLECTED IN ALEXANDRE DUMAS’ THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK

ABSTRACT




The title of this thesis is The Abuse of Power by King Louis XIV in French Society as reflected in Alexandre Dumas’ The Man In The Iron Mask. This research is intended to describe the factors that constructed the abuse of power and the effect of the abuse of power by King Louis XIV in French society under his reign as reflected in Alexandre Dumas’ The Man In The Iron Mask novel.

This research is grouped into a library research. The primary source is the novel entitles The Man In The Iron Mask, while the secondary sources are any books in relation to the study. The data of the research are gathered through observation and documentation. Finally, they are analyzed by using the sociological approach proposed by Alan Swingewood’s theory, Aristoteles and Thomas Aquinas’ theory in politics.

The result of the research shows that the factors that constructed the abuse of power by King Louis XIV is (1) the form of government in a state, (2) the government system, (3) powerful authority or the sovereign by the King that has divine right to justify the King’s absolute authority. And the effects of the abuse of power by King Louis XIV are (1) Political conspiracy to against the King. (2) Prohibited organization of the society that was opponent with the state ideology. (3)The abnormal political activities and behavior because of the abuse of power by King Louis XIV and also, it was caused unfitting ness in social control, social stratification and social mobility in French society.
