THE MYTHS IN THE ANCIENT GREEK AS REFLECTED IN SOPHOCLES’S OEDIPUS THE KING

ABSTRACT




The title of this thesis is “The Myths in the Ancient Greek as reflected in Sophocles’s Oedipus the King. A Semiotic approach” this research tries to reveal the myths that happened in daily life on Thebes in Ancient Greek. The objectives of this research are to know the myths and its significances based on Sophocles’s play Oedipus the King.

In writing this research, in data collecting method, the writer uses the observation and documentation method. That are reading the primary and secondary data carefully and critically and finding the feature of the object research. In data analyzing method, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method by applying the semiology and mythology theory by Roland Barthes.

The answers to the problem formulation are shown through the analysis. (1) The believe of Gods symbolize the status in Greek Kingdom. (2) The oracle of Delphi was caused Oedipus kill his father and marry his mother (3) How they believed a blind soothsayer same with God (4) A curse and prophecies make Oedipus Blind and make him lose from Thebes (5) The marriage between Son and his mother are forbidden (6) They must worship God to safe their city (7) Women are the important part of the history of the great men in the world (8) The people know what is the important of the name.
