BSTRACT
This study is a literary study of a novel. The title of this rAesearch is “The Development of Science and Technology and It’s Influence to English Society In the 19th Century as Reflected in H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine. There are three reasons of the writer to conduct a research on the novel The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. The first, the novel was first one of Wells’s science fiction novel and was an instant success. Second, the novel The Time Machine describes the protagonist is able to travel into the future use machine tool. Third, the novel contains special background and many problems that appear as the effects of the development of science and technology. This research is attended to portray the development of science and technology and its influence to society.
The method of the study is based on the library research and internet. The main data in this study is the novel The Time Machine. After the data are gathered, they will be analyzed by using the theory of mimetic approach (Subhan, 2003, Abrams, 1984).
There are two important points resulted from this study. The first point is the development of science and technology. That development results innovations. Those are (a) The Protagonist finds fourth dimension, He had new theory to dimension, (b) time Traveller creates machine tool, namely time machine. He uses it to travel into the future. The second point is the influence of development of science and technology to society. Those influences are (a) Science and Technology cause human evolution where their creatures are changed; (b) Human characters are changed. It is caused by the development of science and technology, (c) Society is hostile to each others because they are not know each others, (d) Exacerbate social imbalance happen in education, (e) Social system is changed. The lower class becomes powerful while higher class becomes weak.
