A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON ENGLISH POSTERS AND BANNERS IN YOGYAKARTA

ABSTRACT

       This research entitled “A Discourse Analysis on English Posters and Banners in Yogyakarta” is aimed at describing types and features of cohesion and the situational contexts that commonly occur in the English Posters and Banners In Yogyakarta.
       This Research uses descriptive qualitative research, using the content analysis method as the technique of analyzing research, because the researcher describes and the produced data are in the form of words and sentences. The data are the texts and the Sources of the data in this research are taken from the English Posters and Banners in Yogyakarta. In collecting the data, the writer uses observation and recording method, while the technique of collecting data is in looking for the English Posters and Banners in Yogyakarta and then take a picture of the English posters and banners. The instruments are data card, data sheets, and the writer. Then identified and classified based on the discourse analysis.
     The result finding shows based on the frequency and percentage are the types of cohesion that occurs in the English posters and banners are the grammatical cohesion with the highest frequency that consists of Conjunction (34.43%), subsequently followed by Reference (32.79%), and Ellipsis (27.87%). And the Lexical Cohesion only consists of repetition (4.91%). The fact is grammatical cohesion represents the most prominent type of cohesion which typically characterizes the texts of English posters and banners. The features which dominate the occurrence of conjunction are additive conjunction and causal conjunction (38.10%), temporal conjunction (14.28%) and adversative (9.52%). The second most prominent type is reference (32.79%) and the features that dominate are demonstrative reference (100%). The situational contexts in English posters and banners consist of the relevant features of participants that refers to the public or the readers of English posters and banners. The topic is related to the advertisers informing and promoting their advertisement in the form of English posters and banners. The setting taken on the streets. And the purpose of English posters and banners is to make the public or the readers easy to understand and interested in the advertisement texts of English posters and banners. The advertisers of English posters and banners use simple and short language in these advertisement texts because the advertisers want to make the publics or readers easy to know the content so the publics or readers are interested in the advertisement.
