ABSTRACT




The title of this thesis is The Effect of the Lack of Positive Role Models in the Environment towards the Main Character’s Behavior in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the characterization of the main character in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, (2) to describe the influences of the social environment toward the main character, and (3) to describe the moral values.

To conduct this result the writer follows the library method. It means the writer sees and visits some libraries to gather the data. The data can be divided into primary data and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and the secondary data are taken from several references that have relevance to the subject and object of the research. The researcher reads the novel carefully and critically.

The result of the research findings can be described as follow the first research finding is the characterization of Holden Caulfield was become cynical towards other caused by the lack of positive role models, the second research finding is the social environment (family, teacher, and friend) gives the lack of positive role models towards Holden Caulfieald, and the third research finding is the moral values found positive and negative. The positive moral values that can be found are struggle, live is hard, and loving while the negative moral values that can be found are lie and phony, cynicism, and rough and rude.
