SPIRITUAL VALUES AS REFLECTED IN PAULO COELHO’S BY THE RIVER PIEDRA I SAT DOWN AND WEPT: A PRAGMATIC STUDY

ABSTRACT


This thesis is a literary study on a novel entitled By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept by Paulo Coelho. Paulo Coelho is indeed known as one of the great American Latin authors and as Gibran Milenium whose most of his works are related to his view about how to make a meaning in a life. Here, he strives to explore the story of love is always something that encourages closer to eternity and the essence of life.This sixth novel is depicting as story of love, as strives to show that true love is an act of total surrender. It is a wonderful novel, with poetic and transcendent narrative, that reflects all the mysteries of love, life and spiritual. The objectives of the study are to describe the spiritual value that can be taken from the novel and to describe the reader’s perception of spiritual value in the novel.

In employing the research, the subject of this research is all the data in the novel By the River Piedra I sat Down and Wept by Paulo Coelho, while the object of this research is the theory of pragmatic approaches and literary perception that supporting the subject of the research. The data is collected by using note technique method. Reading the novel is the first step in the research. After observing the data, the next step is visiting some libraries to get more references and recording, and filtering the data taken from the references. The next step of this research is to determine the spiritual values that can be taken from the novel by using the pragmatic study. And the last step of this research is to determine the reader’s perceptions to the spiritual love analyzed by using the literary perception theory of Wolgang Iser (in Yapitaum, 1997: 16).

Some of important research findings can be stated as follows. Firstly, there are some spiritual values inside the novel. They are faith, hope, love, suffering, and prayers. Secondly; there are some perception’s readers about spiritual love. And as a result, (1) the reader’s perception is concerned to Pillar about how to review the world as personally and socially perception. (2) It is also implied to readers into narrative process and provoked into a wide variety of reactions.
