A STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE NOVEL TOREY HAYDENS ONE CHILD

ABSTRACT

      This thesis entitled “A Structural Analysis of the novel Torey Haydens One Child”. The objectives of this study are (1) to explore the intrinsic elements employed in One Child and (2) to determine among those parts and discover their relationship.
      The method of the research is based on library research. It means the writer sees and visits some libraries to gather the data. The data can be divided into primary data and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the novel of One Child by Torey Hayden and the secondary data are taken from books and writings that have relevance to the subject and object of the research. The gathered data are recorded into data cards; after the data are gathered they are analyzed by using the structural theory (structural study) in Burhan Nurgiyantoro (1966).
       The result of the study can be described as follow: One Child talks about six year’s old girl, Sheila who had bad emotional temper and disturbance abused that never gets love from others. The theme of One Child is about child. Six years old girl, had bad temper, disturbance abused that never spoke, never cried who wants to find the way to be well. The setting of the novel is the school, at the Sheila’s house, at the Sheila’s bedroom, in the hospital, in the hearing room, in the mall and pizza parlor, in Chad’s car, in the bus, and in Jefferson Elementary. The plot of the novel is started from exposition and the climax of the story is happy ending. The main characters are Sheila and Torey Hyden. While the minor characters are Sheila’s friend (Peter, Tyler, Max, Freddie, Sarah, Susannah Joy, William, and Guillermo), and the assistants of Torey Hayden are Anton and Whitney. The point of view uses the combination between the omniscient point of view and the first person point of view. The style uses the simple and complex sentence to explain the story.
