ABSTRACT
The title of the research is The Effort of The Main Character for Her Prestige as Reflected in Guy De Maupassant The Necklace: A Psychological Analysis. The writer is motivated to choose the short story The Necklace as her topic in this S-1 thesis because of the following : First, the short story is the best short story of Guy De Maupassant it most popular. The second, the language of the short story The Necklace is not too difficult to understood. The third, There are some moral value of the short story. The objective of this research is the characterization of the main character Matilda.
In the research, the writer performs the descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research is the short stories entitle The Necklace written by Guy De Maupassant, and the object of the research is focused on Psychological analysis the short story. To get the needed data and information, the writer visits many libraries, does critical reading of the short story and reads several related books and articles. Besides using the library research, the writer also takes the data from the internet to get some information of the short story and the author completely. After the data are collected, they analyzed by using theory the psychological analysis is used though the character and characterization by Subhan (2003:7), the theory of psychology of literature by Wellek and Austin Warren (1956: 90).
Some of the important research findings are stated as follow: firstly, the character of Matilda as the main character can categorize as round character and based on the character. Secondly, the writer finds the effort the main character for her prestige, changing perform, changing life style, borrowed expensive necklace, showing the prestige. Thirdly, the writer finds moral values in the short story. Matilda wants to like perfect woman rich, Matilda could be happy if she had only such thing.
