ABSTRACT
The title of this thesis is The struggle of Paulo in looking for his wife as reflected in Paulo Coelho's "The Zahir". The researcher discusses the psychology of the main character, Paulo and the factor that caused the main character psychology as reflected in the novel The Zahir by using psychological approach, also the struggle of Paulo in looking for his wife. This study is aimed to find out the psychological of the main character, Paulo and the factor that caused the main character psychologically.
The method of the study is based on the library research in which the data are taken from books, magazines, newspaper and the internet. The data are classified into main and supporting data. The main data are taken from novel itself and the supporting data are taken from the sources which are related to and support the subject matter of the study. To analyze the data, the researcher uses the theory of character and characterization by Subhan(2003), psychology by Agus Sujanto (1980) and struggle by Touraine(2003). The writer chooses the approach because the topic that is going to be analyzed is about the psychological of the main character Paulo Coelho in the novel The Zahir written by Paulo Coelho.
After having analyzed the novel, the writer discovers that Paulo characterization is described as egoist, immoral, not a loyal man, negative thinking, mutineer, persistent, don't have a stand, revenge, arrogant. The psychological of Paulo as the main character is caused by family, experience and environment when she lived in Paris and Kazakhtan. Beside that there are some factors caused the psychology of Paulo they are intern factor as related the factors which influenced come from him self, related to physic condition, temperament, the genetic feature of the character and secondly exogen factor comes from outside in him self such as environment, experience, family. The struggles of Paulo are introduce the worldly, to out from his past life, to looks new adventures, to know Esther characters, trust the supernatural power, to find his zahir, to follow his wife straight.
