- THE PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE PROTAGONIST CHARACTER “MARY STUART” IN DANIELLE STEEL’S THE RANCH

ABSTRACT

The researcher is motivated to choose The Ranch by Danielle Steel’s psychologically, as the topic of this research because of some reason. Firstly, in Danielle Steel The Ranch the writer has found that the main character Mary Stuart is easy going has easy to build social intercourse and interest to another people. Furthermore, it will interest to know about it. Secondly, this literary not only full of aesthetic quality but also moral teaching and good friendship. Therefore, the writer deals this research by analyzing the main character Mary Stuart in Danielle steel’s The Ranch psychologically and the factors influencing the character and characterization of Mary Stuart. This research uses psychological approach as a tool to interpret psychological aspect of the novel.

The researcher divides the source of data into two namely: primary data and secondary data. Primary data is the novel of Danielle Steel’s The Ranch; and secondary data is all of the data which helpful research. Moreover, the researcher uses library research method to gather all the data. After all the data are collected, in this analysis the writer applies Jung’s psychoanalysis theory. The researcher s uses two approach, namely the objective approach as an approach in describing the character and characterization of Mary Stuart and psychologically the factor that influence the personality of Mary Stuart in The Ranch by Danielle Steel.

The result of researcher can be described as follows: 1. The character of Mary Stuart physically is beautiful and fashionable. Psychologically, she is perfectionist, active, strong women, faithful, socialable, empathic, loving, friendly, honest and open minded. 2. Based on Jung’s psychoanalysis she has positive attitude toward society, easy to build social intercourse, easy to adaptation or socialize, open minded. Mary Stuart is extrovert women because she has a positive attitude. 3. The factors that influence Mary Stuart are exogenous factors. The exogenous problems are her environment of residence located in really healthy, comfortable, and luxurious things, in New York, USA). The persons around her that are Bill who makes her perfect and strong women, Tanya who always gives support and make Mary Stuart open her mind to her surrounding, Zoe who gives Mary Stuart suggestion to have social spirit.
