ABSTRACT

The title of this research is The Portrait of The Elite Woman as Reflected in Arthur Goldeen’s Memoirs of a Geisha: An Islamic Literary Criticism. The writer is motivated to choose the novel Memoirs of a Geisha as her topic in this S-1 thesis because of the following reasons; firstly, Memoirs of a Geisha is the best of Arthur Golden’s work is very important to be discussed. Secondly, Memoirs of a Geisha has many interesting topics. Thirdly, Arthur Golden presents the main character of Sayuri, the exotic world of Geisha that is particular interesting for the writer; the description of the Geisha; and geisha’s life in Japan. The objectives of the research are (1) the described the geisha as a multitalented woman in the problem she has. (2) The description of the portrait of the elite woman in the novel Memoirs of a Geisha that is seen through an Islamic Literary Criticism.

In this research, the writer uses the Islamic literary criticism by Subhan (2003: 91). The subject of the research is the novel entitled Memoirs of a Geisha written by Arthur Golden and the object of the research is focused on the portrait of the elite woman observed by Islamic study.

To get the data and information, the writer employs a library research. The data collecting method is used in this research. The data analyzing method is descriptive analysis, which its technique is started with some quotations and statements that are described by some explanations. The result of this thesis can be described as follows: (1) Sayuri's characterization in Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha is a multitalented woman. (2) The love affair viewed is forbidden in Islamic literary criticism. (3) Based the elite woman in Memoirs of a Geisha observed by Islamic literary criticism. It was arranged on the Holy Koran and Prtophet’s Tradition.
