- THE STRUGGLE OF MAIN CHARACTER FOR MAINTAINING LIFE AS REFLECTED IN DANIEL DEFOE’S ROBINSON CRUSOE: A PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY

ABSTRACT

The research entitled The Struggle of Main Character for Maintaining Life as Reflected in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe: A Psychological Study. The writer is motivated to choose the novel Robinson Crusoe as the object of the research because this novel has the psychological problem deals with maintaining life efforts the empty island without anyone, experience of being slave in a society with race differences and social classes. The novel talks about Robinson Crusoe‘s survival effort in maintaining life psychologically.

To do the analysis, the writer performs the descriptive qualitative research to the novel as the subject of the study and the object is Robinson Crusoe as the main character in maintaining life as reflected in the novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. The method used in the research is observation and document. The central issues which will be analyzed by the by the writer are the character and characterization of the main character observed psychologically. It is used the theory of Subhan (2003) and Nurgiyantoro (2005). And also the writer tries to describe the struggle of Robinson Crusoe for maintaining life in the novel Robinson Crusoe. The theory of psychology of literature is taken from Subhan (2003).

Some of the important research findings are stated as follows. The first is the character and characterization of Robinson Crusoe as the main characterization can be categorized as a protagonist. The second, the struggle of the protagonist character for maintaining life. It is done because he was trapped in an island without civilization. And he tried to maintain his life there
