AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH ABBREVIATIONS MADE IN PBI STUDENTS’ SMS AT UAD

ABSTRACT

This thesis entitled An Analysis of English Abbreviations Made in PBI Students’ SMS at UAD is intended to analyze English Abbreviations including types, parts of speech and the relationship between English abbreviations and the original words found in PBI Students’ messages.

The research belongs to descriptive qualitative method. By using two techniques, namely; interview and documentation techniques the researcher collects the messages of PBI Students starting from April until July 2008. In analyzing the data, the researcher learns and classifies the forms of English SMS Abbreviations by categorizing the types, namely numeric and alphabetic forms and gives some explanation, the researcher also classifies the forms related to Parts of speech in which the English abbreviations are formed in each sentence of messages, and formulating the relationships between English SMS abbreviations and the original words.

The result of this research is divided into three parts. First, the types of English SMS Abbreviations can be grouped into two types, namely numeric and alphabetic forms. Second, the variety of English Abbreviations is categorized into parts of speech, such as pronoun, verb, noun, conjunction, preposition, adverb, article, adjective, and interjection. Third, the relationship between English abbreviations in SMS and the original words which can be divided into two relations, namely the relationship based on rules of abbreviating and the relationship based on unrelated rules of abbreviating. The relationship based on the rules always follows the some common characteristics of forming the abbreviations, such as: some abbreviations are read as individual letters, some abbreviations are read as words (acronym), and some abbreviations are only written forms; the forms are still pronounced as the full words. While the second the relationship is based on unrelated rules; that is similar sound. The forms which have similarity on the sounds with the original words can be seen in both numeric and alphabetic or letter forms.
