ABSTRACT
This thesis entitled The Analysis of Speech Acts in Garry Marshall’s “Princess Diaries 1” (Movie Version) is intended to analyze speech act including forms, types, and functions found on the dialogue script of the “Princess Diaries 1” (Movie Version).
This research uses descriptive-qualitative method. With the descriptive method, the data collected are taken from the document in form of dialogue script. While, with the qualitative method, the data are collected for describing the social interaction in form of speech act, related to some issues, such as: types, forms, and functions. The dialogue script was taken from the site http://www.script-rama.com/movie_scripts/p/princess-diaries-script-transcript-hathaway.html. In analyzing the data, the researcher does four steps: reading comprehensively the script, counting the total a number of speech acts in the script by giving number on each act, classifying every act in the dialogue script based on forms, types, and functions of speech acts, and analyzing each act.
The result of this research is divided into three parts. The forms of speech act found are declarative, interrogative, and imperative forms. Second, the types of speech act found are locutionary, perlocutionary, and illocutionary. Third, the functions of speech act found are divided into five categorizes, namely assertives which have various meanings, namely complaining, reporting, stating, and boasting something; directives which have various meanings, namely advising, recommending, commanding, and ordering something; commissives which have meaning, such as giving promise to a future action. Expressives have various meanings, namely surprising, amazing, thanking something, and greeting someone. The last category is declarations where the act is done by a person who has an institutional framework, such as: Clarisse as the Queen of Genovia, Gupta as the Vice-Principal and Mia Thermopolis as the Princess of Genovia.
