AN ANALYSIS OF JARGON IN FOOTBALL SPORT

ABSTRACT

Language is a means of communication to express the ideas and feelings. People communicate with each other using language in their activities. Many activities in this life have their own special language. The research entitled “An Analysis of Jargon in Football Sport” is intended to find out the forms of jargon in football sport, the meanings of jargon in football sport, and the functions of jargon in football sport.

In this research, the writer uses qualitative method. The use of qualitative method is appropriate with the methods of analyzing data in this research. The data of this research focuses on words matter than numbers and there is no statistical procedure. Some instruments to support the data in this research are internet, football magazine, football match, football player, football commentator. The writer uses the noting and interview techniques to collect the data. The analysis is focused on the forms, the meanings, and the functions of jargon in football sport using descriptive qualitative method.

The result of this research shows that there are four forms of jargon in football sport, they are word, phrase, abbreviation and acronym forms. Word has the highest frequency of occurrence. There are 55 or 56.12% of the total data, 36 phrases or 36.73% of the total data, 5 abbreviations or 5.10% of the total data and acronym is the smallest frequency, there are 2 acronyms or 2.04% of the total data. Jargon in football sport has denotative and connotative meanings. The percentage of denotative meaning found in jargon in football sport is higher than connotative meaning. There are 96 or 97.96% denotative meanings of the total data and 2 connotative meanings or 2.04% of the total data. The functions of jargon in football sport are to give a person sense of belonging to a specific group, to make it easier for a person to communicate with their friends and to show effective signals for identification.
