A Syntactic Analysis of Complex Sentence Used in Student’s Thesis

ABSTRACT

The research entitled A Syntactic Analysis of Complex Sentence Used in Student’s Thesis Written by Siti Nur Qo’idah is intended to explain complex sentence used in student’s thesis. The objectives of this research are to find out and describe the structure of complex sentence used in student’s thesis and to find out and describe the structure and the function of dependent clause used in the complex sentence.


This research uses descriptive qualitative method because the data are in form of words. This research does not use any statistical procedure and calculation. The data consists of 18 complex sentences used in student’s thesis written by Siti Nur Qo’idah. Those 18 complex sentences are only the sample of complex sentences used in the student’s thesis. To collect the data, the writer uses metode simak dengan teknik catat (observing method and noting technique). To analyze the data, the writer uses metode padan (identifying method) and structural analysis method. The data are read and observed to find out the complex sentence in that student’s thesis. Then, the writer will find the structure of complex sentence and dependent clause of that complex sentence. The last, the writer will find the function of that dependent clause in that complex sentence. 

The result of this research shows that there are four structures of those complex sentences; they are SVC, SVC Adverb, SVO Adverb, and SV Adverb. The structure of complex sentence which often used in the student’s thesis is SVC. The other result is the structure and the function of dependent clause. The writer found 21 dependent clauses from 18 complex sentences. The writer found 7 structures of dependent clause. Those 7 structures are SOC SVC, SOC SVO, SOC VO, SOC V Adverb, SOC VO Adverb, SOC SV Adverb and SOC V. There are 9 subordinate conjunctions, they are that, which, even though, after, if, why,
because, who, and what. The subordinate conjunctions which often used in the student’s thesis are that and which. From those clauses, the writer found 13 adjective clauses, 6 adverbial clauses, and 2 noun clauses. The last result is the function of the dependent clauses in those complex sentences. The writer found 4 functions of dependent clause in those complex sentences. Those are adjective clause modified noun or pronoun (post modifier of noun phrase), adverb, subject and object. Adjective clause modified noun or pronoun (as post modifier of noun phrase) is the most frequent occurrence in the student’s thesis.
